This paper is on the collection, category, scale, and management of books collected in hyanggos (the libraries of old confucian schools) in later Joseon. Primary data for this paper are the list of books printed in the town magazines published in the later Joseon and the collections in those old schools.The books were collected in three ways: first, they were distributed from the central government during the early period; second, some of them were purchased with the fund local governors raised who were very interested in educating people; lastly by personal donors. The libraries consisted of mainly Confucian books including the Seven Chinese Classics (the Four Books and Three Classics), books for teaching children, histories, and Sung Confucianism. However, as we see in the case of Gyeongju hyanggyo which collected large amount of literary books, the scale of libraries must have been different from each other. As the libraries were one of the important businesses to be transferred when the governors were changed, each hyanggyo kept book registers to maintain them. There were librarians who took charge of them in hyanggos, and they checked the registers and books when the librarians were transferred.If the book lists or any related data could be found more in hyanggos, more concrete study of it will be carried out.

이 연구는 조선후기 향교소장 서책의 형성 과정과 서책구성 및 규모, 그리고 향교문고의 보관과 관리에 대한 연구이다. 조선후기에 편찬된 읍지에 실려 있는 서책목록과 향교의 소장 자료조사를 통해 발굴된 서책목록을 기본 자료로 이용하였다. 향교문고의 형성과정은 크게 세 가지로 나누어 보았다. 첫째, 조선전기 중앙으로부터의 頒賜 둘째, 조선후기 대체로 興學에 뜻이 있는 지방수령의 기금조성을 통한 마련, 그리고 세 번째 개인기증의 방법이다. 향교문고의 구성은 四書三經을 비롯한 유교경전과 小學類, 역사서 및 성리학 서적이 주가 되었다. 하지만 문집류를 적지 않게 구비하고 있는 경주향교의 경우를 보면 향교마다 서책의 규모는 달랐을 것으로 보인다. 향교에서의 서책관리는 지방수령이 교체될 때 후임 수령에게 인수인계해야 하는 물품 가운데 하나였기 때문에, 향교 내부에서는 ‘서책치부’를 갖추어 두고 관리하였다. 이를 담당하는 有司가 따로 있었고, 校任의 교체가 이루어질 때에는 치부기록과 소장서책을 일일이 검열하여 확인하였다. 향교의 소장 자료 가운데 서책목록이나 관련 자료를 더 조사하여 찾을 수 있다면 향후 좀 더 구체적인 향교문고의 모습을 연구할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
