Like Kant, Rawls belongs to the deontological ethics tradition. However, Rawls' standpoint takes a slightly different form from that of previous thinker. Specifically, Rawls develops what he claims are Principles of Justice through the use of a model of a fair choice situation(the Original Position with its veil of ignorance) in which everyone accepts Principles of Justice and that those principles have moral weight as a social criterion. What Rawls argues by saying that Principles of Justice is an inevitable alternative to pursue social primary goods and motives of moral action are justified only to the extent that those links the validity of set-up of the Original Position and Priority of the Right over the Good. Thus, Rawls's conception of justice seems to be moral constructivism. Because endowing moral motivation is to be guaranteed through fair procedure asking for Principles of Justice and Priority of the Right. If Rawls could approve Priority of the Right over the Good, Principles of Justice become normative criterion of social life. And up to that justifying, Principles of Justice could be practically actual catalyst effecting moral motives of action.

롤즈는 개인의 다양한 욕구들 간의 갈등이 최소화되면서도 그것들이 가장 합당하게 발휘될 수 있는 규준으로서 공정성으로서의 정의를 제시한다. 그가 제시한 공정성으로서의 정의는 원초적 입장에서의 정의의 도출과 좋음에 대한 옳음의 우선성을 근거로 실현될 수 있다. 원초적 입장과 옳음의 우선성 원리를 통해 롤즈는 도덕이 절차적인 과정을 통하여 사회의 행위규준으로서 구성되고 충분히 타당하고 강력한 행위의 동기가 될 수 있음을 입증하려고 하였다. 도덕적 동기가 정의 원리에 의해 합리적으로 구성될 수 있음을 보일 수 있다면 실제 사회적 삶의 현장에서 선택될 있는 바람직한 삶의 적확한 기준이 마련될 수 있음을 시사한다.
