The purpose of this thesis is to study the correlation which the development of the multidimensional thinking(critical, creative and caring thinking) has with moral education and the method to instruct discussion and essay writing in order to cultivate it. For this purpose, I first of all explored the components of such thinking and its meanings, and after examining the features and activity procedures of community of inquiry I explained how to practice moral education in the community of inquiry employing a concrete case. Even though each component of multidimensional thinking has its own feature, each has to be complemented by the other in actual case of thinking. And I explicated that the inquiry-driven society or community of inquiry is regulated by ideas of democracy and reasonableness. Democracy is the purpose we seek for its own sake but democratic ways and virtues are the means to develop the multidimensional thinking. Reasonableness presupposes the fact that the truth and knowledge we seek are not fixed or absolute and the epistemology that they might be adjusted or agreed by the members of community of inquiry. The moral education under such presupposition in the community of inquiry may contribute to the realization of the ideal of integration of moral cognition, affection and behavior. And for this purpose the role of the teacher is crucial in that he has to be a model of an owner of integral character for students. Such role can be exercised while instructing discussion and essay writing to them.

본 논문의 목적은 탐구공동체에서 추구하고자 하는 다차원적 사고 즉 비판적･창의적･배려적 사고의 함양이 도덕교육과 어떤 관련성이 있는지, 그리고 그러한 사고 능력을 배양하기 위한 도덕과 토론 ･ 논술지도를 어떻게 할 것인지를 탐구하는 데 있다. 이를 위하여 우선 다차원적 사고의 구성요소와 그 의미를 알아보았고, 탐구공동체의 특징과 운영방법을 살펴본 다음, 탐구공동체 안에서 도덕 교육을 어떻게 할 수 있는지를 구체적인 예를 들어 설명해보았다. 다차원적 사고가 그 요소별로 나름의 특징을 가지고 있지만, 실제의 사고에서는 상호 보완적으로 작용한다는 점을 밝혔다. 그리고 탐구적인 사회 즉 탐구공동체는 민주주의와 합당성이라는 두 가지 이념에 의해 규제된다는 것도 밝혔다. 민주주의는 그 자체 우리가 추구하는 목적이면서도 그 방식과 덕목은 다차원적 사고를 개발하는 데 수단이 되기도 한다. 합당성은 우리가 추구하는 진리나 지식은 고정되어 있거나 절대적인 것이 아니며, 탐구공동체 안에서 구성원들의 지혜를 통해 조정하고 합의한다는 인식론을 전제하고 있다. 그와 같은 전제하에 이루어지는 탐구공동체 안에서의 도덕교육은 지･정･의 또는 지･정･행의 통합이라는 도덕교육의 이상을 달성하는 데 어느 정도 역할을 할 수 있다. 그리고 그러한 역할을 제대로 달성하기 위해서는, 통합적인 인격의 소유자로서의 모델을 학생들에게 보여준다는 측면에서 교사의 역할이 또한 중요하다. 그와 같은 교사의 역할은 토론과 논술을 지도하면서 발휘될 수 있다.
