The purpose of this study is to identify different types of knowledge management strategy adopted by organizations. More specifically, based on prior studies, this study first classifies knowledge management strategy into four different types (i.e., the external knowledge codification strategy, the internal knowledge codification strategy, the internal knowledge personalization strategy, and the external knowledge personalization strategy) by considering two major dimensions of knowledge management (i.e., knowledge creating scope and knowledge sharing type). Second, this study analyzes four successful knowledge management cases to suggest practical guidelines. Using the four Korean organizations that have implemented enterprise-wide knowledge management initiatives, we conclude the sole positive impact of each strategy. The results of this study provide important implications to both academics and practitioners in terms of how to choose the most appropriate knowledge management strategy to their organizations. Furthermore, the knowledge management strategies identified in this study provide organizations with a benchmark against which they can compare their current knowledge management strategies.
