The purpose of the study in this paper is, by reviewing the social problems in
multicultural society contexts in Korea, to develop, for coping with those problems, the
elements of the social studies curriculum content elements, and, as a result, to make a
contribution to a good build-up and enhancement of multicultural society in Korea.
Firstly, the importance of the school social studies as well as the social problems in
multicultural society contexts in Korea have been investigated.
Secondly, the direction of school social studies curriculum, for the purpose of
resolving the social problems from multicultural society contexts, in each of curriculum
content elements for coping with those problems has been developed.
Thirdly, a few appropriate directions of school social studies curriculum contents
selection in multicultural society problems have been proposed.
As a result of the study, it has been emphasized that school social studies must be
administered in the way to contribute to the learner's practical participation in the real
multicultural social life and that, for the sake of this point, the teachers education system
for training field-oriented multicultural social problems education professionals is of importance.

본 논문에서는 한국사회의 다문화 사회환경 변화에 따른 사회문제의 극복을 위한 논의를 기초로
‘다문화 사회 문제 대응을 위한 사회과교육 내용’을 모색하여 분석기준을 마련하고, 현행 및
2007 개정 초등사회과교육과정 내용을 비교･분석하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 다문화 사회문제 대응을
위한 바람직한 사회과교육내용 선정 방향을 찾고자 하였다. 다문화 사회문제 대응을 위한 초등사회
과교육과정 내용의 선정 방향으로, 초기 사회화 단계에 해당되는 학습자의 다문화 사회 적응에 실
질적인 도움이 될 것, 다양한 영역에 걸친 사회기능 내용의 균형 배치 필요, 사회적 역할교육 내용
의 증가 필요, 실제 역할 수행 관련 갈등문제의 적용 요구, ‘한겨레’를 지나치게 강조하는 현재 내용
의 변화 필요 등이 지적되었다.
결론적으로, 사회과교육에서는 다문화 사회환경 변화에 따른 사회문제를 극복할 수 있는 시민형
성을 위한 의도적 노력과 변화가 요청된다. 이를 위해 교육과정 및 교과서 개발 종사자와 현장 교
육과정 운영전문가의 능력이 중요하다. 그러한 교육과정 운영전문가 양성을 위한 교사교육기관의
교육과정 운영 또한 필요하다.
