This study attempts to investigate into the trends and meanings of cultural studies,
which is nowadays paid increasing attention by scholars, and into grafting cultural studies
on social studies education in order to find out the implications on curriculum
development, particularly on integrated social studies curriculum. The concrete research
themes in the study are as follows. First of all, the concepts and meanings of culture,
which are vary depending on what aspects of cultures are discussed, and various
discourse of cultures are examined. Secondly, this study try to answer what is cultural
studies, how cultural studies have developed, and what are the characteristics and
meanings of cultural studies related with social studies education in order to graft cultural
studies on interdisciplinary social studies curriculum. Thirdly, the meaning of knowledge
based on cultural studies perspectives is reexamined in attempt to redefine the knowledge
dealt with in social studies textbooks. Finally, the implication of cultural studies on
integrated social studies curriculum is analyzed and the future research tasks for the
accomplishment of integrated social studies curriculum were suggested.

본 논문은 최근 학계에 새롭게 부상하는 문화연구의 동향과 의미를 살펴봄으로써 문화연구
와 사회과교육의 접점을 파악하고 공통사회 교육과정에 대한 시사점을 얻고자 시도되었다. 이
에 따라 본 연구에서 살펴본 내용은 첫째, 문화의 정의와 개념에 대해 어떠한 논의가 있는지
전반적으로 다양한 문화의 의미를 파악하였다. 둘째, 문화연구의 사회과교육에 적용할 의미를
파악하고자 먼저 문화연구의 전개과정을 살펴보고, 복잡하고 광범위한 문화연구의 여러 측면
들을 종합하여 사회과교육과 관련된 문화연구의 특성이 무엇인지 제시하고자 하였다. 셋째,
사회교과에서 다루고 있는 지식의 의미의 이해를 돕기 위하여 문화연구의 시각에서 지식의
의미는 어떻게 해석되어 지는지에 대하여 살펴보았다. 넷째, 문화연구를 공통사회 교육과정의
개발에 접목시킬 때 시사하는 점들을 파악하고, 이를 바탕으로 하여 공통사회 교육과정 개발
을 위한 향후 과제를 종합적으로 제시하고자 하였다.
