The purpose of this study was to find out general family concepts and a difference in family concepts according to gender-role identity among elementary school students. The data was collected from 553 of 5th and 6th grade students in Seoul. The contents of this study are summarized as follows: Most students defined the family as a loving people and regard not only their parents but also grandparents as their families. They perceived a blood relation, and marital status to be important in accepting family diversity. Students' normal family ideology was high and many students showed negative attitude to cohabitation and divorce. The order of gender-role identity types of students was undifferentiated, masculine, feminine, and androgynous types and the androgyny type students were more likely to accept the family diversity but also their normal family ideology was high. The conclusions and implications of these findings are discussed.

이 연구의 목적은 초등학생의 전반적인 가족개념과 성역할 정체감에 따른 가족개념의 차이를 분석하는 것이다. 서울시에 거주하는 초등학생 553명을 대상으로 설문지를 통해 가족개념을 조사하였다. 주요한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 초등학생은 가족을 ‘서로 사랑하는 사람들’이라고 정의한 빈도가 가장 높았다. 초등학생의 80%가 가족이라고 인정한 범위는 부모, 형제자매, 친할아버지, 친할머니, 외할아버지, 외할머니였다. 가족의 다양성 수용정도는 결혼을 통한 가족의 제도적 측면과 혈연관계가 중요한 기준이 되었다. 전통적 성역할관은 낮게 나타났으며 동거와 이혼에 대해 매우 부정적 태도를 보였다. 둘째, 가족의 다양성 수용도는 양성성인 아동이 높았으나 동시에 정상가족 이데올로기도 높게 나타났다. 초등학생의 가족개념은 자신의 가족과 관련된 직접적 경험이 많은 영향을 미치고 있으며, 동시에 우리사회의 정상가족 이데올로기와 같은 가족에 대한 통념을 그대로 수용하는 일면을 보였다.
