Preaching is an action and a oral event that a preacher performs in Christ's name. It is also an act of faithful imagination by which a preacher conceives of invisible God and is able to present God to congregation. Moreover, preaching is a means of grace, not only because it provides a link connecting God and congregation, but also because it speaks images, symbols, and meanings which are a hermeneutic for God's self-disclosures. Thus, imagination is a very important element and an essential means in preaching.
Even though, in traditional understanding about preaching which focus on persuasion, there remains distrust of imagination and people regards the role of imagination as something simply ornamental, imagination creates new windows in language for us and opens up new possibilities of faith for us. Imagination gives us new eyes with which to view the world, and gives us new words with which to proclaim the glory of Christ. The effect of imagination in preaching is neither peripheral nor ornamental. It touches the whole being.
By using image, imagination makes an idea or a concept and transfer its meaning with language. Since language has power to do something happening, therefore, within oral event, that is preaching, imagination functions as dynamistic and creative role. The main purpose of preaching is to engage the congregation in the pursuit of an issue or an idea so that they will think their own thoughts and experience their own feelings in the presence of Christ and in the light of the Gospel. To summarize, the role of imagination in preaching is evocation, communication, and transformation.

설교는 그리스도의 이름으로 행하는 행위이며 언어적 사건이다. 설교는 또한 믿을만한 상상력을 통한 행위로서, 상상력에 의해 설교자는 보이지 않는 하나님을 인식할 수 있고 또한 보이지 않는 하나님을 회중에게 보여줄 수 있다. 더욱이 설교는 은혜의 수단이기도 한데, 그 이유는 하나님과 회중을 연결시키는 통로를 제공할 뿐만 아니라 하나님의 자기 계시를 위한 해석학인 이미지와 상징 그리고 의미들을 이야기하고 있기 때문이다. 따라서 상상력은 설교에 있어서 매우 중요한 요소이고 근본적인 수단인 것이다.
설득에 초점을 맞추는 전통적인 설교 이해에 있어서는 상상력을 불신하고 단지 장식적인 것으로 여긴다 할지라도, 상상력은 언어 속에 새로운 창문을 만들고 믿음의 새로운 가능성을 열어준다. 상상력은 세상을 보는 새로운 눈을 주고 그리스도의 영광을 선포하는 새로운 말을 우리에게 주는 것이다. 설교에 있어서 상상력의 효력은 결코 주변적이거나 장식적인 것이 아니다. 상상력은 존재 전체를 품는 것이다.
이미지를 사용함으로써, 상상력은 관념이나 개념을 만들고 그 의미를 언어를 통해 전달한다. 언어가 무엇인가를 발생시키는 능력이 있기 때문에 언어적 사건인 설교 안에서 상상력은 역동적이고 창조적인 역할로서 기능하게 되는 것이다. 설교의 주된 목적은 회중으로 하여금 설교의 개념이나 문제를 추구하는 데 참여하도록 하여 그리스도의 현존과 복음의 빛 가운데에서 회중이 자신의 생각을 가지며 자신의 느낌을 경험하게 하는 것이다. 간단히 말해, 설교에서 상상력의 역할은 영혼을 불러 일으켜 환기시키고 의사소통이 일어나게 하며 삶의 변화를 가져오는 것이다.
