Even though it is important that an educational pastorate maintain harmony and balance in preaching, chapel, teaching, mission, and service, Korean churches have been putting uneven emphasis on sermon delivery (i.e. Kerygma). This thesis will especially focus on the function of education and mission, and their relationship with each other. Pietism of the Middle Ages is a great example that shows the importance of missionary work. There are several types of Pietism: Spener and Luther’s Pietism, Separateistic Pietism, and Wuertemberg’s Pietism. Among them, Halle-Pietism under Franke focused especially on education and mission. Franke emphasized how a human being should get educated to change himself from the natural state to the state of grace. He also claimed that it is important to take into consideration what a student went through his or her life. In addition, he argued that it is important to educate students on catechism, and make education habitual. To achieve this goal, he founded many schools in which practice and application were emphasized. Theology students were required to serve in schools for orphans. Many missionaries have been produced among those who studied at Halle University. Franke’s influence started from Halle and went beyond German Protestantism to the international sphere. Halle-Denmark Missionary Association sent missionaries to India, and Halle-Pietism expanded its territory of mission to Russia. There was an intimate relationship between Halle-Pietism’s education and mission which produced fruit of ministry. This important relationship should also be recognized in Korean churches.

교육 목회에 있어서 설교, 예배, 가르침, 선교, 봉사 등의 긴밀한 관계와 균형이 중요함에도 불구하고, 한국 교회는 말씀에 치우친 경향이 있었다. 이 논문은 특별히 교육과 선교의 관계와 역할에 초점을 두고 있다. 중세 경건주의는 하나의 좋은 예이다. 경건주의는 여러 형태로 나타났는데 슈페너와 루터 경건주의, 분리주의적 경건주의, 뷔템베르그 경건주의 등이다. 그 중에서 특히 프랑케의 할레 경건주의는 교육과 선교를 중시하였다. 프랑케는 인간은 교육을 받아야 하고, 자연적 상태에서 은혜의 상태로 옮겨 가야 한다고 강조한다. 그는 학교를 많이 세워서 습관화, 교리문답 교육, 학생의 삶에 맞는 방법 등을 통해 교육하였고, 학생들의 실천과 적용을 강조하였다. 학생들은 실제로 학업 중에 고아 학교 교사로 봉사하였다. 할레 대학에서 공부한 학생들 중에 많은 선교사들이 배출되었다. 프랑케의 영향력은 할레 대학, 독일 개신교를 넘어 세계로 뻗어 나갔다. 할레-덴마크 선교회는 선교사들을 인도, 러시아 등지로 파송하기에 이르렀다. 프랑케에게 있어서 교육과 선교의 목적은 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 일이며, 하나님의 사역이었다. 그는 ‘교육’(디다케)을 통해 신앙과 삶의 변화를 실현하려 하였고, 이것은 국내외 선교의 장으로 자연스럽게 이어졌다. 할레 경건주의의 교육과 선교가 긴밀한 관계를 유지하며 사역의 열매를 맺은 것처럼, 이러한 중요한 연관성을 한국 교회도 인지해야 할 것이다.
