This paper was designed to compare the clothing & textile education curriculums in Korea with those in advanced countries like the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia to revamp clothing & textile education on the elementary school level. The findings from this paper are as follows. In the United Kingdom, emphasis are placed on developing problem solving ability, encouraging freely expression, and fostering creativity by allowing diverse approaches on a given topic. In Australia, emphasis are given to the selection of appropriate devices and materials and presenting evaluation thus developing problem solving abilities. Basic knowledge on textiles, materials and clothing environments are also emphasized. In the United States, clothing & textile curriculums vary from States to States. Clothing & Textiles education tends to be regarded as a part of an integrated curriculum rather than as an independent curriculum. Particularly, subjects such as ‘dance’ and ‘drama’ emphasize the importance of the clothing & textiles as an instrument necessary for the performances. Those subjects focus on the advancement of creativity and aesthetic sense by making and managing the costume and props. Various vocations related to the clothing & textiles are introduced in the curriculum in many States. Based on comparative analysis in this paper, it is necessary to introduce integrated teaching method using diverse materials and devices that are easily available in daily lives rather than relying on function and practice oriented methods for the Elementary textile and clothing education in Korea. It is also recommendable to start textile and clothing education at earlier school years so that students acquire diverse knowledges in the area form the early stage of their lives.

초등의생활 교육의 개선을 위해 영국, 미국, 호주 등 선진국들의 의생활 관련 교육내용을 우리나라 의생활 관련 교육내용과 비교, 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 영국의 경우는 한 가지 주제를 정하고, 이를 다양한 각도로 접근하여, 자유로운 표현과 창의성, 문제해결력을 기르는데 중점을 두고 있다. 호주의 경우에는 적절한 도구와 재료의 선택, 평가의 과정을 경험하고, 문제해결 능력을 키울 수 있도록 하고 있으며, 섬유와 소재에 대한 기초적인 지식과 피복환경학적인 면을 강조하고 있다. 미국은 주별로 차이가 많으며, 의생활교육이 미술, 연극, 무용과 같은 과목에서 의상과 소품에 대한 제작과 관리를 통한 창의성, 심미성 등의 발달에 중점을 두고 통합적으로 운영되는 경우가 많고, 의생활과 관련된 다양한 직업을 소개하는 예도 많았다.우리나라의 초등 의생활 교육에 있어서도 실습이나 기능위주보다는 주변 환경에서 접할 수 있는 다양한 소재와 도구를 통한 통합적인 교육이 필요하다고 생각하며, 비교적 저학년부터 의생활에 대한 교육을 통해 다양한 지식을 보다 빠른 시기부터 접할 수 있게 되었으면 한다.
