This research aims to examine the Japanese preference of pattern by analyzing characteristics of patterns having emerged in Ukiyo-e, a culture of cho-nin that has made a broad impact on art and culture in the Edo Era, in conjunction with social, cultural, and ideological backdrops of the then masses.
The methodological approach to this research generally relies on referring to numerous domestic and international literatures on Ukiyo-e including books and periodicals, written and pictorial archives mainly from the National Diet Library in Japan, and reliable websites concerned with the Japanese culture. This research focuses on the Edo Era (1600～1868) and its subjects to be dealt
with include drawings illustrating red-light districts and the masses in the early and mid-Edo Era, and Kabuki performers in the late. It looks into features of Kosode pattern by categorizing it into the natural, geometrical, theatrical pattern, and multiple one respectively. In addition to this, in order to grasp the applicability of these patterns to Ukiyo-e, this research examines the then trendy and preferential patterns by analyzing frequently-used patterns and ways of their composition as well as expression.
