I surveyed the trends in teaching world geography, mainly in the compulsory education stage after the end of the 1970s in Japan, China and Korea. In Japan, in the following 30 years, the learning content and school hours for all subjects, particularly world geography were reduced considerably. In China, the curriculum that attached great importance to world geography continued to be used until the end of the twentieth century. However, the curriculum reform of basic education in 2001 introduced some integrated subjects such as ‘Society and Morals’ and ‘History and Society’, and the learning content of world geography has decreased considerably. In Korea although world geography is taught in an effective manner, the next curriculum reform is considering a large reduction in the learning content of world geography to correspond to the five-day-week school system. As a result, the learning content with respect to teaching world geography has reduced in these three East Asian countries. Moreover, learning about their neighboring countries is disregarded. It is necessary to have comprehensive knowledge of our neighboring countries. Therefore, I suggest that Japan, China and Korea introduce a similar subject called ‘East Asian Geography’.

본 연구는 1970년대말 이후의 한중일 의무교육단계에 있어서 세계지리교육을 비교를한 것이다. 일본에서는 과거 30년간 모든 교과과목의 학습내용과 수업시간이 삭감되었지만, 특히 세계지리의 학습내용이 대폭적으로 삭감되었다. 중국에서는 세계지리를 중시한 교육과정이 20세기말까지 계속되어 왔지만, 2001년부터 도입된 기초교육과정 개혁으로” 사회와 품덕”,” 역사와 사회”라는 통합과목이 탄생하였고 거기에서는 세계지리에 관한 학습내용이 극단적으로 감소하고 있다. 한국에서는 오늘에 이르기까지 충실한 세계지리교육이 행해져 왔다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 주 5일제 수업에 대응한 다음 교육과정 개정에서는 세계지리에 관한 학습내용이 큰 폭으로 삭감될 것이 예상된다. 동아시아 3개국에서의 세계지리에 관한 학습내용의 삭감됨에 따라 이웃나라에 관하여 배우는 학습마저도 소홀하게 되고 있다. 이웃나라에 관한 지식을 확실히 인식하기 위해서 한중일 3개국에서 ” 동아시아 지리”라고 하는 공동과목을 도입할 것
을 제안한다.
