Recognizing that there are important elements to be understood for adequate Social Studies experiential learning, the present study purposed to clarify the meanings of experience, experiential learning, and Social Studies experiential learning.
Experience is perceived to be personal-subjective involvement, and its subject is the inside of the person who has the experience, and therefore it has vividness and intenseness and is used limitedly to personal or individual affairs. When pure experiences obtained from consciousness are used in learning, the learning involves activities for expressing and understanding the experiences. Experiential learning is executed through the cyclic process of experience, expression and understanding, and through the process, the learner maintains the harmony between body and mind, gets free from self‐consciousness, and attains the joy of self‐reward and the enrichment of life. That is, the nature of experiential learning is internalizing the contents of the Social Studies curriculum. In this context, Social Studies experiential learning comprehends all types of learning that prepare the learners to continue Social Studies through their entire life.

학교교육은 학습자 중심 교육의 패러다임으로 진행되고 있다. 그 정점에 있는 교육 철학이 자기주도적 학습, 열린교육, 체험학습이라 할 수 있다. 체험은 1인칭적 주관적 경험으로 인식되며 인간의 내면을 대상으로 하기 때문에 생생함과 강렬함을 가지며 삶과 관련된 개별적인 또는 개성적인 경험에 한정해서 사용한다. 체험학습은 체험-표현-이해라는 순환적 과정을 통해 이루어지며 이런 전 과정이 몸과 마음이 어우러지면서 자의식이 상실되고 이를 통해 자기 스스로의 보상의 기쁨으로 삶을 윤택하게 하는 학습의 본질을 나타내는 개념이라고 할 수 있다.
이런 맥락에서 본다면 사회과 체험학습은 사회과적 삶을 평생 동안 살아가도록 학습자를 준비시키는 모든 학습형태가 될 것이다. 사회과 체험학습은 내면화와 표출화의 과정이 순환적으로 전개되면서 사회과적 삶을 평생동안 살아가도록 준비시키는 사회과 학습의 모든 형태를 말한다고 할 수 있다.
