This thesis examines some problems contained in the 8th Curriculum's Elementary and Primary-
Secondary Moral Education and explores the ways to cope with them. The curriculum ignored the fact that the Western and the Oriental ethics differed in their origins, contexts, logics, and methods and tried to absorb the latter in teaching the former. This thesis points out that there are many problems in the Western ethics and that it is dangerous to absorb the Oriental ethics ignoring its own characteristic. To educate the Oriental ethics in such a way is unreasonable and cannot accomplish the purpose of education. Therefore, it is necessary to find the way to resolve those problems, and the way lies in inquiring thoroughly into the strength and weakness of the Oriental ethics and reviving its strength in today's education. Of course, in this process, the peculiar logic and methods of the Western and Oriental ethics should be taken into consideration.
Considering those things, in this thesis it is argued that the Oriental ethics is based on the logic of
'daedae(對待)' and 'byeonyeok(變易)' and that those are embodied in 'self-control' and 'conquest of desire.' Taking Confucianism's '충서' and Taoism's 'ban(反)' as concrete examples, this thesis inquires into the logic of 'daedae(對待)' and 'byeonyeok(變易)' in the Oriental ethics and shows that the logic is operating in 'oryun(五倫)' that has functioned as a framework to maintain community over several thousands years in East Asia. In this context, East Asian ethics has admonished to "forsake one's self" and to "cultivate one's morals and then participate in social activities."
With these things in mind, this thesis argues that 'gukgibokrye(克己復禮)' 'jangyuyuseo(長幼有序)''gyeomha(謙下)' 'jijjok(知足)' are the essential elements in maintaining our community. It becomes manifest by the arguments of this thesis that we need such a curriculum that can revive the peculiar logic and methods of the Oriental ethics. We must also revive in today's education fields our ancestors' methods of education that could realize respectable moral education in the past.

이 논문에서는 제8차 교육과정으로 운용될 ｢초ㆍ중등학교 도덕과 교육과정｣이 안고 있는 문제점과 그 해소 방안을 논의하여 보았다. 여기에서 지적한 문제는, 서구의 도덕윤리와 동양의 도덕윤리가 발생 배경, 맥락, 논리, 방법 등 여러 가지 면에서 다르다는 점을 감안하지 않고 서구의 방식 속에 뭉뚱그려 가르치겠다고 하는 것이었다. 그래서 서구의 도덕윤리가 지닌 단점도 결코 만만치 않으며, 서구의 보편 윤리 속에 동양을 뭉뚱그려 함몰시켜 운용했을 경우의 위험성 또한 작지 않음을 지적하였다. 그렇게 동양의 도덕윤리를 가르치려는 것은 그만큼 비합리적이며 교육의 효과를 얻기도 어렵다는 점도 지적하였다. 그러므로 이것이 문제라면 이제 새로 운용할 교육과정에서는 이를 바로잡을 수 있는 길을 모색하는 것이 마땅하며, 그러기 위해서는 동양의 도덕 윤리가 지닌 장ㆍ단점을 철저하게 따져 보고 그것이 지닌 장점을 교육의 장에서 살리도록 해야 함을 논하였다.
여기에서 중요하게 고려할 점은 서구의 도덕윤리와 동양의 도덕윤리가 바탕으로 하고 있는 각각의 논리와 고유한 교육 방법 등을 고려해야 한다는 사실이다.
이러한 맥락에서 동양의 도덕윤리가 바탕으로 하고 있는 것은 대대(對待)와 변역(變易) 논리이며 그것이 도덕윤리에 운용되어서는 ‘자기를 이김’과 ‘욕망의 극복’으로 드러남을 논하였다. 그리하여 유가의 ‘충서(忠恕)’와 도가의 ‘반(反)’을 구체적인 예로 삼아 동양 논리의 대대ㆍ변역을 고찰한 뒤, 수천 년 동안 동양에서 공동체 유지의 틀로 기능을 발휘한 ‘오륜(五倫)’ 속에 바로 이 대대ㆍ변역 논리가 작동하고 있음을 살폈다. 나아가 이러한 맥락에서 동양의 도덕윤리에서는 ‘사사로움’을 배격한다는 것과 ‘먼저 사람이 된’ 뒤 ‘대사회적 활동을 하라’고 하였음을 논하였다.
필자는 이러한 논지의 연장선 위에서 우리가 우리의 공동체를 유지하자면 극기복례(克己復禮)와 장유유서(長幼有序) 및 겸하(謙下)와 지족(知足)이 필수 불가결한 항목임을 논하였다. 필자는 이러한 논의를 통하여 동양의 도덕윤리가 지닌 논리와 고유 방법을 살리는 교육과정을 우리는 갖아야 할 논리적 필연성이 드러났다고 본다. 따라서 과거 손색없는 도덕윤리 교육을 실현하던 우리 조상들의 교육 방법도 오늘날 우리 교육 현장에서 반드시 되살려야 한다.
