Humans think and make a decision through language. And their behaviors are based by this kind of thinking and decision making. On this score, Language sets the important position in the area of the moral life. J. L. Austin discusses the active language through the concept of the performative sentence.
R. M. Hare accepts Austin’s semantics, and presents the attribute of moral language called ‘universal
prescriptivism’. In his viewpoint, moral language plays a role as the command and restraint to him or herself. J. Wilson suggests ‘moral thinking’ through ‘moral components’ which have their roots in R. M. Hare’s ‘universal prescriptivism’.
In J. Wilson’s moral components, moral decision gets practical function to do its works a kind of
order to him or herself. At the same time, it becomes methodology as a series of process and method to solve a problem. J. Wilson takes R. M. Hare’s ‘universal prescriptivism’ affected by J. L. Austin’s philosophy of language; he develops this once more in terms of methodology of moral education.
In the end, the meaning of performative utterances in J. L. Austin’s speech act theory, R. M. Hare’s prescriptivity, and J. Wilson’s moral components, all of them, show us that the moral motive for moral behavior is already inherent in moral judgment. According to their opinions, moral judgment ultimately helps utterer to practice morally.
So J. Wilson’s moral elements indicate not only the meaning as methodology about the moral
education field in which language primarily serves as a medium but the possibility that moral judgment can be a guarantee of moral practice. From this, there are significant points that moral components deal with the cognitive, definitive, behavioral side of morality in a unitive manner, and that make sure of the justice of moral education.

인간은 언어라는 도구를 통해 사고하고 판단한다. 그리고 이러한 사고와 판단을 토대로 행동한다. 이러한 점에서 언어는 인간 삶의 중요한 위치를 차지한다. 도덕이라는 삶의 영역에서도 마찬가지이다. 인간은 언어라는 매개를 통해 도덕적 문제 사태를 인식하고, 도덕적 판단을 내리며 행동한다. 도덕규범 또한 학생들에게 언어로서 전달되고, 언어로서 그들의 두뇌 깊숙이 자리 잡게 된다.
도덕적 논의에서 언어의 문제에 대해 깊이 논의한 학자로 우리는 헤어와 윌슨을 들 수 있다.
언어분석철학자로서 오스틴은 수행문이란 개념을 통해 행동하는 언어에 대해 논한다. 헤어는 오스틴의 의미론을 수용하여 ‘보편적 처방주의’로 대변되는 도덕언어가 지닌 특성을 제시한다. 헤어에 있어, 도덕언어는 자기 자신에 대한 명령이며 구속의 역할을 한다. 윌슨은 헤어의 ‘보편적 처방주의’를 기반으로 도덕성 요소를 통한 도덕적 사고하기를 제안한다. 윌슨의 도덕성 요소 안에서 도덕판단은 자기 자신에 대한 하나의 명령으로 작용하는 실천적 기능을 갖는다. 동시에 도덕성 요소는 문제를 해결하는 일련의 절차와 방법으로서 하나의 ‘방법론’이 된다. 결국, 오스틴의 수행론에서 나타난 수행발화의 의미, 헤어의 처방성, 윌슨의 도덕성 요소는 모두 도덕판단 안에 이미 도덕적 행위를 위한 도덕적 동기가 내재되어 있음을 보여준다. 그들에게 있어 도덕판단은 궁극적으로 발언자로 하여금 도덕적으로 실천하도록 돕는다.
따라서 윌슨의 도덕성 요소는 언어가 주된 매개체로 작용하는 도덕교육 현장에 대한 하나의 방법론으로서, 동시에 도덕판단이 도덕적 실천을 담보할 수 있다는 가능성을 제시한다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다. 이로써 윌슨의 도덕성 요소는 도덕성의 인지적, 정의적, 행동적 측면을 통합적으로 다룬다는 점뿐만 아니라, 도덕교육의 정당성을 확보해 준다는 점에서 의미가 있다.
