The purpose of this paper is to analyze the social and cultural contents of 2007 revised social studies curriculum and textbooks in secondary school.
According to the result on content analysis of revised social studies curriculum, the curriculum misses out the core contents of the social and cultural education sphere in secondary school. It is problematical to replace the missed contents with the social and cultural contents of first grade in high school.
And the content analysis results of society textbooks in middle school are as follows:
First, it is necessary to connect socialization concept and self identity concept with socialization theories for students' understanding. Second, it is necessary to introduce the basic concepts such as social interaction and social groups, and to explain easily bureaucracy concept considering the level of first grade in middle school. Third, it is necessary to introduce the materials centering popular culture than traditional culture.
Popular culture and the critique are important to student who live in mass society and information ages.

본 연구는 2007년 개정된 사회과 교육과정을 중심으로 중등학교 국민공통기본 교육과정의 사회문화교육 내용을 비판적으로 분석하였다. 그리고 현행 중학교 사회문화교육 내용을 분석하여 문제점을 지적하고 출판될 교과서들을 위해 개선점을 제시하고자 하였다.
연구결과에 의하면, 개정된 사회과 교육과정의 사회문화교육 영역은 학생들이 기본적으로 학습해야 할 핵심 내용을 빠뜨리고 있다. 고등학교 사회의 교육과정에서 나타난 성취기준을 분석해 보면, 중학교에서 다루어 왔던 ‘현대사회의 변화와 대응’ 단원의 내용은 중등학교 국민공통기본 교육과정에서 사라졌다. 그리고 중학교 교과서의 내용분석 결과 다음의 개선 필요성이 제기되었다. 첫째, 사회화이론을 기초로 하여 사회화 개념과 정체성 개념을 연결할 필요가 있다.
둘째, 사회적 상호작용과 사회집단의 기본적 개념을 소개하고, 조직의 관료제 개념에서는 중학생 1학년 수준을 고려한 난이도 조정이 필요하다. 셋째, 문화와 관련해서는 다른 학문과 중복되는 전통문화의 자료보다 학생들이 체험할 수 있는 대중문화내용과 그들의 문제점들을 비판적으로 다룰 수 있는 자료가 필요하다.
