This study attempts to examine the nature and curriculum of the Social Studies in the Dewey laboratory school in order to reinterpret the way of understanding of Dewey's educational theory in the issues-centered curriculum camp and the history-centered curriculum camp.
The first part of this study examines the Dewey's conceptions of society and history, and his aims of social studies, which come under the nature of laboratory school social studies.
The second part of this study examines the practice of structure of the social studies curriculum in the laboratory school, its principles and characteristics, which come under the curriculum of the social studies in the Dewey laboratory school.
It requires now that Dewey's educational theory and the general practice of education in the Dewey laboratory school are to be examined in order to give a more clear and definite answer about controversies over Dewey's educational theory in the both camps.

본 연구의 목적은 쟁점 진영과 역사 진영의 상이한 듀이 교육이론 해석을 재검토할 수있는 토대를 제공하기 위해서 듀이 실험학교에서의 사회과교육 성격과 교육과정 구성에 대해 구체적으로 검토하는 데 있다.
먼저 실험학교의 사회과 성격 차원에서는 듀이의 사회관과 역사관 그리고 이러한 관점에 기초하고 있는 그의 사회과교육 목적을 알아보았다.
다음으로 실험학교의 교육과정 구성 차원에서는 교육과정 구조의 실제와 이러한 실제에 적용된 사회과 교육과정의 원리와 특징을 추출하였다.
이러한 연구 결과와 더불어 듀이 교육이론과 실험학교의 전반적인 교육 모습에 대한 검토가 함께 이루어진다면 양 진영의 상이한 듀이 교육이론 해석을 재검토하는 데에 있어 보다 명확한 준거점을 얻을 수 있을 것이다.
