What is the essence of Christian Prayer? This paper attempts to answer this question from the perspective of depth psychology, especially of contemporary psychoanalytic counselors. The perspective helps us to see the inner experiences of prayer rather than just a habitual ritual action.
Prayer as the inner experiences with God tells us that it is a spiritual and existential activity. It also points out that the counselor in this process is God, who is warm-hearted and full of wisdom. Christians in prayer talk to God about their existential concerns as well as spiritual issues. God does respond to them with touching heart and insights. This is why so many people in the world come to the Lord regardless of their color, class, gender, age, ethnicity, etc.. The essential features of Christian prayer besides them include the opportunity of Christian people to have real and personal relationship and to experience God by talking to each
other. As a person approaches to his/her counselor and talks to the counselor about almost everything, Christians can do so by kneeling themselves to God. Such a relationship and dialogue creates for a christian the same processes as the counseling session for a person. What makes prayer a more powerful counseling process is the fact that it can be done
without any restriction on space and time issues. Christians people can pray anywhere and anytime. It is quite different from the counseling activity which is always done only inside the counseling center and only within the scheduled time. The space and time for counseling activity is very restricted and conditional. However, Christian prayer does not have such a problem. It is possible always and anywhere. These four features are therefore the essences of Christian Prayer. Christian prayer is very special in that it is a spiritual and existential activity, an encounter with God who is warm and intelligent, a personal relationship with dialogue genuine, and possible anytime and anywhere.

본 논문은 기도의 본질에 대하여 정신분석학적인 상담의 관점에서 살펴봄으로써 기도와 상담의 역동적인 유사성을 연구한다. 오늘날 서구세계에서 발전한 전문적인 대화서비스의 상담분야는 그 과정에 있어서 기독교인들의 기도과정과 너무나도 흡사한 가운데 있다. 내담자가 상담자에게 찾아가서 자신
의 문제를 고백하면서 상담자의 위로와 조언을 듣는다. 이것은 기독교인들이 삶의 어려움에 있을 때에 주님에게 찾아가 기도하며 위로와 힘을 얻는 것과 거의 동일하다. 이에 본 논문은 심층적인 차원에서의 기도를 분석해 보았는데, 그 결과 기도는 영적이고 실존적인 관심이며, 따뜻하고 지혜로운 영혼의
상담자이신 주님을 만나서 깊이가 있는 대화적 교제를 통해 정신적이고 영적인 힘을 공급받는 활동이다. 그리고 기도는 상담과는 다르게 시간과 공간을 초월해서 이와 같은 서비스를 받는다는 점에서 특별한 기능을 하고 있음을 밝혔다. 상담이 사람을 변화시키듯이 기도가 사람을 새롭게 한다. 그런데 그
변화의 과정은 언제 어디서나 주님과의 인격적인 교제와 대화를 통해 정서적인 지원과 통찰력을 공급받아 실존적이고 영적인 관심을 충족시키는 역동적인 본질을 가지고 있다.
