This study aims to examine Nicholas Wolterstorff's educational thoughts, who is a prestigious philosopher in the United States, and develop a new direction of Christian education in Korea. I have defined his thoughts as 'education for shalom,' and discussed it in the three categories. Firstly, education for shalom encompasses education for justice. Education for justice means that we teach justly for justice, which is necessary for shalom. Secondly, education for shalom encompasses education for delight and gratitude. Education for delight and gratitude is the education, through which students enjoy delight, which is an essence in shalom, and learn gratitude to God. Thirdly, education for shalom encompasses education for lament. Education for lament is the education, through which students mourn sufferings happened by injustice. These justice, delight, and lament are educational aims and values that we should restore in the educational context where there are full of sufferings derived from unjust competition and indifference to others. This article has suggested several implications regarding Korean education after discussing Wolterstorff's educational thoughts. Firstly, his idea on education for shalom suggests a holistic vision on education based on a Christian tradition. Secondly, his idea on education for justice suggests an alternative to Korean education that values utilitarian individualism. Thirdly, his idea on education for delight and gratitude suggests implications to Korean education, in which education becomes burden to students. Fourthly, his idea on education for lament suggests that suffering, which is important for education but has been ignored so far, should be a key issue.

본 연구의 목적은 미국의 저명한 철학자인 니콜라스 월터스토프의 교육사상을 탐구하여 오늘날 한국 기독교교육의 방향성을 새롭게 모색하고자 하는데 있다. 월터스토프의 교육사상을 샬롬을 위한 교육이라 보고, 본 논문에서는 이것을 세 가지로 나누어 살펴보았다. 첫째, 정의를 위한 교육은 샬롬의 필수적 요소인 정의를 실현하고 정의로운 방법으로 교육하는 것을 의미한다. 둘째, 기쁨과 감사를 위한 교육은 샬롬의 중심 내용인 기쁨을 누리게 하는 교육이며, 기쁨을 누리게 하시는 하나님께 대한 감사를 배우는 교육이다. 셋째, 애통을 가르치는 교육은 우리 주변에 불의로 인해 고통 받는 자들의 아픔에 동참하게 하는 교육이다. 이처럼 정의, 기쁨, 애통은 오늘날 불의하고 과도한 경쟁으로 인한 고통이 넘쳐나고 타인에 대한 무관심으로 가득한 우리의 교육현장에서 새롭게 회복해야할 교육적 목표요 가치들이다. 본 연구는 월터스토프의 교육사상을 고찰한 뒤 이것이 한국의 교육에 대해 갖는 함의들을 생각해 보았다. 첫째, 그의 샬롬을 위한 교육은 기독교적 전통에 기초하여 교육에 대한 총체적 비전을 제시하고 있다. 둘째, 그의 정의를 위한 교육은 공리주의적 개인주의가 만연한 한국교육에 대한 대안을 제시할 수 있다. 셋째, 그의 기쁨과 감사를 위한 교육은 교육이 학생들에게 고통이 되고 있는 한국교육에 중요한 시사점을 제시해 준다. 넷째, 그의 애통을 위한 교육은 지금까지 우리의 교육에서 간과되어 온 고통의 문제를 중요한 교육적 주제로 제기하였다.
