It is graffiti that young black people in the Harlem area, the seamy of the splendid image of New York, started representing their sense of alienation through the form of painting. Graffiti is a pictorial factor of Hip-hop culture, and the origin of Hip-hop culture and its history of development are the important background of graffiti. During the 1990's, in company with the inflow of Hip-hop culture, graffiti was attempted. Although it has a short history, it is recognized an important genre of modern art and is jumping to a new step. Famous artists in Europe and the United States paint on the place where their nations request, exhibit as well, and are trying to the activities as a graphic designer.On the contrary, there are not many places to access graffiti art in Korea. Except the front areas of Hongik University, graffiti is not officially allowed in many places. Considerable numbers of most graffiti artworks, which people can appreciate in space other than the front areas of Hongik University, were painted by anonymous artists, who created them stealthily while sitting up all night and taking cruel criticism and the risk of punishment. As long as neglected public space with devastative images still exist, it is thought that it is a time the cultural attainments of the general public and the wise conduct of the government are needed above all.Accordingly, this paper aims at analyzing cases, that is, the artworks of Banksy, Keith Haring, Basquiat, who are vigorously active in graffiti art activities as well as the artworks of artists in Korea, and events harmonious with graffiti, and seeking to the role of graffiti as public design.

화려한 뉴욕 도시 이면의 빈민가에서 젊은 흑인들의 소외감을 회화의 형식으로 표현되기 시작한 것이 그래피티(Graffiti)이다. 그래피티는 힙합문화의 회화적 요소이며, 힙합문화의 발생과 발전역사가 중요한 배경이 된다. 1990년대 힙합문화의 국내 유입과 함께 시도된 그래피티는 작품 창작의 역사가 짧지만 현대 미술의 중요한 한 장르로 인정받고 있으며, 새로운 단계로 도약하고 있다. 유럽과 미국의 유명작가들은 국가가 요구하는 장소에 그림을 그리고 개인전을 열기도 하며 그래픽 디자이너로서의 활동도 꾀하고 있다. 이에 반해 국내에서 그래피티 아트를 접할 수 있는 곳은 그리 많지 않다. 홍대 앞을 제외하고는 공식적으로 그래피티가 허용되는 곳은 많지 않다. 홍대 앞 이외의 공간에서 감상할 수 있는 그래피티 중 상당수는 이름 없는 그래피티 아티스트가 모진 비난과 처벌의 위험을 감수하고 밤을 새우며 몰래 그린 작품들이다. 황폐한 모습으로 방치된 대중공간들이 여전히 존재하는 이상 대중의 문화적 소양 확대와 관의 지혜로운 처신이 무엇보다 필요한 시점이 아닌가 생각된다. 따라서 본 논문은 최근 그래피티 작가의 활동이 활발한 뱅크시, 키스 헤링, 바스키아 등의 작품뿐만 아니라 국내 작가의 활동 및 그래피티를 접목한 이벤트 등 사례를 분석하고 공공디자인으로서의 그래피티의 역할을 모색하고자 한다.
