Although this thesis concentrates on issues of Graphic Design education, also pertain to education in other areas of design; most apply to arts education and many are relevant to post-secondary education in general. With all of the pressures on higher education and all of the questions facing graphic designers and design educators, why reconsider the basic premise of graphic design education? Since inertia tends to discourage basic change, why not concentrate on excellence within the current system? The answers to those questions center on both fairness and survival.NASAD recognizes the need to find ways of clarifying and maintaining standards in art and design through the responsible education of artists and designers. By means of accreditation, it can encourage those institutions that consistently give students a sound basis for significant future accomplishments in art and design. Accreditation also imposes on those institutions the responsibility for continual effort to strengthen art and design education in general.in both accredited and not-yet-accredited schools. In addition, it provides a basis for public recognition of an institution‘s quality.In light of this tendency toward professionalism, it may seem counterintuitive that we not only increase the argumentation of design training with more liberal studies, but also reconsider graphic design education-as a liberal arts subject.

그래픽 디자이너와 디자인 교육자들을 압박하고 있는 당면한 문제는, 고등교육의 틀 속에서, 디자인 교육의 전제는 왜 다시 재고되는 것인가? 왜 지금 현 체재(system)의 수월성에 집중하지 않고. 관습이 기본적 변화를 가로 막고 있다고 생각하는가? 이다.이 논문은 디자인 교육에 관한 글로써 미국의 디자인교육 인증체계에 중심을 둔다. 본 논문의 연구범위와 방법은 NASAD(National Association of Schools of Art and Design) 인증 시스템을 중심으로 미국의 미술과 디자인 교육의 전반을 알아보고, 그중에서 NASAD에 가입하고 인증을 거친 대학의 시각디자인 관련 학과의 전공교과목 교육과정을 중심으로 관련내용의 체계를 파악하였으며, 시각디자인의 폭넓은 관심을 목표로 하고 시각디자인 분야의 교육에 관련된 부분을 중점으로 연구하였다.디자인 교육과 디자이너 교육은 그 책임이 전적으로 교육현장에 있는 교육내적 영역이다. 오늘의 우리에게 요구되는 교육내적 문제는 무엇보다도 뚜렷한 교육목표, 범위, 순위 및 효과를 명시한 교과과정이라 할 수 있다. 이의 수행은 능력과 사명감을 가진 훌륭한 교수진과 학교에 의하여 가능하다. 이 같은 여건만 갖추어 진다면 우리가 바라는 좋은 디자인교육이 될 수 있을 것이다.
