Dokkaebi is the reflection of our nation’s nature: and of ourselves. For a long tim Dokkaebi has been with us as an unique creature, half as the silly human being and the other half as the divine nature. However the stories of Dokkaebi, that has been transmitted orally through families or neighbors, has now disappeared into children’s books and animations. Also the image is different from what we heard back in our childhood, since the oral tradition of Dokkaebi has been interrupted by rapid industrialization and appearance of increasing numbers of nuclear. Therefore the researcher feels that now is the time to study on our Dokkaebi stories and building the proper image for them.Dokkaebi exists as totally different images between the nobilities and the plebeians. Also numbers of different images transmitted to us, including rowdy, Guimyunwa or plane, are all perceived as Dokkaebi, without any denial. If that is the case, what would be the most proper image for our Dokkaebi? The researcher suggests to look for Dokkaebi’s appearance that were presented in the Annals of the Choson Dynasty and transmitted through folk tales. By comparing these various representations of Dokkaebi, the proper image of Dokkaebi can be analogized, and the real value of Dokkaebi will be illuminated; as one of our fine cultural heritage and the edutainment content that is related to our national identity.

도깨비는 우리 민족 고유의 심성을 반영한 존재이며 우리 자신이기도 하다. 그동안 도깨비는 어리석은 인간과 신격화된 신성을 반반씩 가진 특이한 존재로 오랫동안 우리 곁을 지켜왔다. 하지만, 주로 집안이나 동네 어른의 구전을 통해 전승되던 도깨비 이야기는 이제 단지 어린이의 동화책이나 애니메이션으로 들어가 버리고 말았다. 그리고 그 시각적 이미지는 우리가 어릴 때 듣던 그 모습이 아니다. 급속한 산업화 및 핵가족의 형성과 함께 전승이 단절된 우리의 도깨비 이야기의 부활과 올바른 이미지 구축에 대한 탐구가 필요한 시점이다. 조선시대 472년간 도깨비는 양반계급과 민중 사이에서 전혀 다른 이미지로 존재한다. 한편 우리는 주변에 전해 내려오는 많은 우락부락한 조각, 귀면와, 또는 평면 이미지들을 모두 도깨비라고 거부감 없이 수용하고 있다. 그렇다면, 우리의 올바른 도깨비 모습은 어떤 것일까. 조선왕조실록에 등장하는 도깨비의 모습과 민담에 전해지는 도깨비의 모습을 찾아보고 비교함으로써 올바른 도깨비의 모습을 유추하고, 우리의 아름다운 문화유산이자 우리의 정체성과 관련된 에듀테인먼트 컨텐츠로서 도깨비의 가치를 재조명하고자한다.
