- This paper reports on a study of the semantic patterns of English-to-Korean translations of to-infinitives and gerunds. This paper first investigates the semantic uses of English to-infinitives and gerunds. The uses are discussed in terms of actualization, aspect, and nominality. Even though there are some disagreements concerning the strict demarcation between the two uses, we suggest that there be dominant criteria for them. From the data analysis about the frequency and semantic uses of the two constructions, we argue that Korean translations reflect the characteristics of actualization and nominality shown in English to-infinitives and gerunds.
