This study searched problems and progressive directions of recently emerging debates about the compulsory education. The sharply conflicted opinions between the elementary compulsory education viewed as the public education and the view based on the neo-liberalism place the core of the debates on the national ‧ social identity, the excellency, the worldwide current of the education, and the competitiveness strengthening. To lead the view about the compulsory education as the logos based on the national needs and the illuminism pedagogy to the
integrated sublimation, not the confrontation, we need the new point of view. So, this study was considered around the post-modernism, and searched the possibility of freeing the isolated view of the compulsory education as it reinterpreted and interrelated the compulsory education with the deconstructing view. Through the change and acceptance, not individual demand, to
re-recognize it as the standard need is currently demanded elementary compulsory education.

본 연구는 최근 부각되고 있는 의무교육에 대한 논란을 중심으로 문제점과 나아갈 방향을 모색하였다. 첨예하게 대립되고 있는 공교육으로서의 초등의무교육을 보는 시각과 신자유주의 철학에 근거한 시각은 그 논쟁의 핵심을 국가적‧사회적 정체성과 수월성, 교육계의 세계적인 흐름, 경쟁력 강화 등에 두고 있다. 계몽주의 교육학의 전통과 국가적 필요에 근거한 로고스(logos)로서의 의무교육을 보는 관점과 교육수요자의 요구와 선택에 근거한 시장 경제적 ‘상품’으로서의 교육을 보는 관점을 대립이 아닌, 통합적 승화로 이끌기 위해서는 새로운 시각이 필요하다. 이를 위해 포스트모던 철학을 중심으로 고찰하였는데, ‘해체’적 관점으로서 의무교육을 재해석하고 상호관계지음으로서 고립된 의무교육의 관념을 벗
어날 수 있는 가능성을 살펴보았다. 개별적 요구가 아닌, 변화와 수용을 통해 발전하는 ‘규범적 필요’로서 재인식하는 것이 현시대에 요구되는 초등의무교육이다.
