In this paper, the Confucian culture of Korean society will be considered the significant factor of Christian education. As addressed and researched by multiple Christian education scholars,
selfhood and culture should be regarded as a more creative and positive relationship within the environment of Christian education. For the discussion of the relationship of self development
and culture in Christian education, Thomas Groome and Carol Lakey Hess are presented here. Subsequently, a brief review of Confucian concept of selfhood, as well as the Christian and
Korean Confucian culture follows. Thereafter, from Michael Cole’s Cultural Psychology, dynamics of culture and educational activity of self–development are suggested as the possible mode of environment of Christian education in Korean Christian education.

이 논문은 한국사회의 유교 문화를 기독교의 중요한 요인, 특히 총체적 기독교 교육 환경을 조성하는 삶의 방식으로 보고 있다. 다수의 기독교 교육학자들의 의견과 같이 기독교 교육환경 안에서 자아 확립과 문화와의 관계에 있어서 보다 더 창조적이고 긍정적 관계를 탐색해나가는 작업이 중요시되고 있다. 이 작업의 일부분으로서 이 논문은 자아와 문화와의 관계에 관한 토마스 그룸과 캐롤 레이키 헤스와의 대화를 시도하면서 유교의 자아론과 한국유교와 기독교와의 관계를 살펴본다. 그러한 후에, 결론
적인 제안으로 마이클 콜의 문화 심리학으로부터 문화와 자아발달의 교육적 활동의 역동성을 기독교 교육 환경의 가능한 방식으로 제안하고 있다.
제롬 브루너와 러시안 학파의 문화 심리학자들과 같이 마이클 콜은 일상의 삶 속에서 일어나는 경험과 활동에 주시하면서 문화 심리학의 중재적 역할에 관심을 두고 있다. 즉, 인간이 그의 여러 가지 활동과 경험의 주체적 역할을 중요시 하지만 그러한 경험과 활동은 둘러싸인 문화, 즉“거미줄,”“조리법,”혹은“컴퓨터 프로그램”으로 비유되는 문화와의 역동적인 관계에 의해서 결정된다. 이러한 경우에 그 활동의 현장성(locality)이 만들어 내는 변화를 수용하여 원래의 원칙과 방법을 변형해 나가는 가에 대한 결정이 한국적 유교 문화에 있어서 중요한 교육적 환경을 조성해 나간다는 것을 주장하는 것이다.
