Christian worship is theological and practical in its characteristic. Accordingly it has to not only search for its theoretical foundations but also at the same time consider the field of worship. That is the reason why Christian worship exists and what it also should do.
A main subject of the Korean church in 2007 was 'the revival of the church.' I think it was to celebrate the centennial of the Great Revival Movement of Pyongyang in 1907 at first, while it was also a phenomenon reflecting the critical situation of present Korean churches. In this situation various theological camps have to examine and analyze carefully the causes of the Korean church's crisis, develop relevant ideas to solve the problems, and suggest ways to overcome these serious problems in the church. It is a responsibility of theology.
I see the problems of the Korean church today from a viewpoint of worship theology and will try to suggest the direction that Korean churches have to recover the essence of Christian worship which means the principle and spirit of worship based on the Bible and formed by the tradition of Christian church. Nowadays many churches of Korea seem to have lost the essence of worship because they regard worship as a means of the church's revival and growth, and incline toward worship form and methodology (traditional worship form or contemporary worship form) rather than the essential aspect of worship. But we should recognize that worship which loses its essence is no longer the true worship that God wants but a performance that human want without God.
With this understanding of the situation of the present-day Korean church, I wrote this article to know clearly the essence of Christian worship, to try to establish a worship theology of the Korean church, and to present the practical ways for the future of worship. Then in conclusion I insisted that the true revival of the church is possible in the revival of worship.

기독교 예배는 신학적인 동시에 실천적이다. 그러므로 기독교 예배는 이론에 대한 탐색뿐만 아니라 실천적 현장에 대한 고려가 언제나 함께 이루어져야 한다. 이것이 실천신학으로서의 예배학이 갖는 존재 근거요 당위라 하겠다.
2007년 한국 교회를 지배한 담론은 ‘교회의 부흥’이었다. 이는 평양 대부흥운동 100주년으로서의 시간적 의미도 있었지만, 한편으로는 현 한국교회의 위기 상황을 반영하는 현상이 아니었는가 생각한다. 신학은 교회를 위해서 봉사할 수 있어야 한다는 의미에서 신학 진영은 오늘의 교회가 처한 상황을 면밀히 진단하고 분석하면서 거기에 따른 적절한 대안을 제시할 수 있어야 한다. 이것이 신학이 신학으로서 교회에 대하여 갖는 책임이라 본다.
본 논문은 그런 의미에서 한국 교회의 현 상황과 문제를 예배신학적 관점에서 보면서, 그 대안으로서 한국 교회의 예배가 무엇보다 먼저 예배의 본질, 즉 성경에 근거하고 2,000년 기독교 역사를 통해서 형성된 기독교 예배의 정신과 원리를 회복할 수 있어야 한다는 방향을 제시하고자 하였다. 지금 한국교회는 예배를 교회 부흥과 성장의 수단으로 여기면서 예배의 본질적인 측면보다는 오히려 형식이나 방법론에 치우침으로써-전통적 예배냐 열린 예배냐 등- 예배의 본질을 상실해 버린 측면이 없지 않다고 생각한다. 그러나 본질을 상실한 예배는 더 이상 예배일 수가 없다. 그것은 하나님 없는 단지 인간의 퍼포먼스(performance)일 뿐이기 때문이다.
필자는 이런 한국 교회 예배에 대한 문제의식을 가지고, 본 연구를 통해 예배에 대한 본질적 이해와 함께, 한국교회 예배에 대한 신학적 정립과 실천적 측면에서의 방법을 제시하고자 하였으며, 진정한 교회의 부흥은 예배의 부흥에서 비롯될 수 있음을 역설(力說)하고자 하였다.
