This study examined the difference of individuals’ CA between Koreans and U.S. Americans and compared their CA difference between intracultural interaction and intercultural interaction. By using McCroskey’s PRCA-24 scale, this study investigated cross-cultural differences between Koreans and U.S. Americans in four generalized-context CA. The findings of this study showed that; first, each culture has different characteristics involving the rank of four generalized
context CA; second, across interaction situations Koreans have much more CA than U.S. Americans; third, across four generalized-contexts Koreans’ CA in intercultural interaction were far larger than that of intracultural interaction. The implications and limitations of this study and
suggestions for future CA studies were discussed.

본 연구는 문화 내 접촉(동일민족간 상호작용) 과 문화 간 접촉(이민족간 상호작용)의 상황에서 한국인과 미국인의 커뮤니케이션 공포증에 대한 차이를 조사하고 있다. 맥크로스키의 커뮤니케이션 공포증 척도를 이용하여, 본 연구는 일상적으로 흔히 접할 수 있는 네 커뮤니케이션 상황에서 한국인과 미국인 간의 커뮤니케이션 공포증을 측정하였다. 측정결과, (1) 한국인과 미국인은 상황별 커뮤니케이션 공포증에 대한 서열에 있어서 다른 특성을 나타내고 있으며, (2) 한국인이 미국인에 비하여 전체적으로 상황에 관계없이 커뮤니케이션 공포증을 더욱 크게 느끼고, (3) 한국인이 문화 내 접촉에 비하여 문화 간
접촉에서 더욱 커다란 커뮤니케이션 공포증을 지니고 있음을 보여주고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 연구 결과와 관련하여 여러 함의와 앞으로의 연구방향을 제시하면서 아울러 본 연구가 지니는 한계를 논의하고 있다.
