The literary life of Shimazaki Doson(1872-1943), who was born in the middle of the Age of Meiji, was begun in his aspirations for the western civilization. And then he was interested in traditional values of Japan, feeling that the value of his country after he suffered from the incident of 'Sin Sang (新生)' of Japan and directly experienced the foreign culture in his middle age.
Aspiring for the pure things of Japan, Doson had been yearning for essential Japanese culture. By the way, his literary ideal was not only Japan but also 'the Orient' throughout his literature study. He realized the excellence of the Orient culture and then gradually started to rediscover the Orient.
Nobody can pass over that the destination of the literary world view of Doson is in 'Orient'. The documents which Doson had studied was reported to the excellency of Culture of Korea to the World for the reason of his interest in and passion for it. He is, as a japanese, also likely to give a help for the actual proof of the Korean ancient history in which has been being added to
the interest in these days.
Having Studied, realized and aspired for the Orient that is the origin of Japanese culture, he proved indirectly that the point of return where he started to study was 'Korean peninsula'. Japanese cultural source was absolutely not in their country, China or the West, but in 'Korea'.
His aspiration for what it was started From the Western civilization and Japanese tradition to the Orient made him try to search for a new ideal. That his passion for literature tried him constantly to express his ideal with literature might be one of the reason why he is being respected as a modern writer.
