He uses the third personification as Jehyeon-Lee without using the first person
'I' when he describes the fact that participated in the particular circumstances
with the departed saint, then he derives so that the reader may sympathize with
his personal criticism by describing the circumstances objectively while he
controls to be stuck or assimilated to the dead person overly.
In order to heighten the effect of reader's reasoning and imagination, he not
only describes the personal experiences of narrator himself connected with the
departed saint, but also he hints the dead person's personality and loyalty
through connected circumstances.
Also, Ikjae converts the subject into the incident by interposing the fiction of
question and answer, debate, speech, and etc. that happens in the limited space
for short time and by appearing the fictitious character. Through this dramatic
description, he brings the subject person's shape into relief clearly, whence he
raises the literary value of memorial inscription and acquires the confidence of
criticism.

묘지명은 문학적 의식보다는 고인의 행적을 기록하고 기리기 위한 실용적인 목적을 가진 문장인데, 행적과 논평이라는 서사 대상과 그 이야기를 독자에게 전달하는 서사 행위를 갖추었다는 점에서 충분히 하나의 문학양식으로 성립될 수 있다.
묘지명의 인물평은 공정해야만 독자의 신뢰감을 얻을 수 있으나, 서술자의 태도가 기본적으로 고인에 대한 긍정적인 감정에서 출발하기 때문에 사실을 과장할 가능성은 늘 있게 마련이다. 익재 이제현은 이러한 묘지명의 인물평에 신뢰감을 주기 위해 서술자 양상에 변화를 주고 있다.
익재는 고인과 특정한 정황에 참여하였던 사실을 서술할 때 ‘나’라는 1인칭을 사용하지 않고 ‘이제현(李齊賢)’이라 3인칭화 하여, 고인에게 지나치게 밀착하거나 동화되는 것을 통제하면서 지극히 객관적으로 정황을 서술하여 자신의 인물평에 독자가 동조하도록 유도한다.
또한 독자의 추리, 상상의 효과를 높이기 위해서 고인과 관련된 자신의 직접 경험을 서술하여 관련 정황을 통해 고인의 성격과 충성심을 보여주는 1인칭 경험 서술자를 등장시킨다.
