The current life long education in Korea concentrates on performing a vocational education by which students can get various qualifications owing to social economical needs. But it is said that there leave much more emphasis on the citizenship education by which can bring up the mature democratic citizens in the present korean society. The various citizen organizations by which several demands of each classes and groups are reflected are made in a comparatively brief time due to efforts to realize democracy and the ending of military dictatorship in the korean society during that time. But it is seemed that the democratic citizenship educations which they are performing is a lot of lack, and their scope is not deep and broad as well. Therefore in this paper I considered the realities and tasks for democratic citizenship education from the life long perspective by investigating a talent cultivation teaching which has been neglected a little bit in the korean life long education during that time. In details for that, firstly I analyzed the concept definition and necessity of democratic citizenship education. Secondly, I grasped the characteristic and current situation which the democratic citizenship education can have in the korean life long education. Thirdly, I considered the tasks of a life long education for the democratic citizenship education and the present problems of it.

현재 한국의 평생교육에서는 시대적인 사회적 필요에 의해 자격증 취득에 초점을 맞춘 직업기술교육과정 위주의 교육이 주로 이루어지고 있다. 하지만 오늘날 한국 사회에서는 성숙한 민주시민을 양성하기 위한 시민교육 특히 성인교양교육 및 성인정치교육을 위한 시민교육의 비중이 점차 확대일로의 경향을 보이고 있다. 그 동안 한국사회에서는 군사 독재 정치의 종식과 민주주의의 구현을 위한 노력의 덕분으로 비교적 단시간에 각계각층의 요구가 반영된 다양한 성격의 시민사회단체 및 기관들이 만들어 졌다. 그러나 이러한 기관과 단체들이 실시하고 있는 민주시민교육은 상당히 부족하며 그 범위 또한 포괄적이거나 심층적이지 못하다. 이러한 문제의식에 의거하여 본 논문에서는 한국의 평생교육 중에서도 소홀히 하고 있는 “성숙한 민주시민이 되도록 하는 자질 함양교육”에 초점을 맞추고 성인의 “민주시민 교육의 현실과 과제”를 평생교육의 관점에서 고찰한 후 나름의 대안을 제시하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 구체적으로 첫째 민주시민 교육의 개념 정의 및 필요성을 분석해 보았으며, 둘째 한국 평생교육에서 민주시민교육이 지니는 성격과 현황을 고찰하였고, 셋째 민주시민 교육의 현안문제와 민주시민교육을 위한 평생교육의 과제 등을 제기하였다.
