The aim of this paper is to examine the current situation of ethics subject and to search for ways that ethics subject can get comparative advantage over other competing subjects, given the nationwide practice of high school elective-centered curriculum from the school year 2004. Unlike the previous national curriculums, the 7th national curriculum diversified parties concerned with subject selection. In particular, students are presented with the right to choose subjects, so the curriculum is also called elective-centered curriculum. From the teachers' viewpoint, presenting students with options for subject selection may be considered the evaluation of the instruction result. Through this paper, it will be checked if ethics subject is equipped with proper conditions to compete with other competing subjects, and if it turns out not, cause for and solution to the problems will be sought to get proper and right evaluation from the various parties concerned with subject selection. To do this, the improvement of subject contents selection and arrangement, the improvement of evaluation method, and subject identity establishment are presented as the tasks to be resolved. In particular, the rearrangement of the numbers of units to be completed for such in-depth elective courses as 'Ethics and Thoughts', 'Traditional Ethics' and the composition of ethics subject in the College Scholastic Ability Test are pointed as the structural problems to be readjusted first and foremost for fair competition with other subject, and practical alternatives are presented to solve those problems.

본 논문은 2004학년도부터 고등학교에서 선택중심 교육과정이 전면적으로 시행되는 상황에서, 윤리 교과가 처한 현실을 진단해보고, 윤리 교과가 경쟁 관계에 있는 다른 교과보다 비교우위를 확보하는 방안을 모색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 금년도부터 고등학교에 전면적으로 시행되는 제7차 교육과정은 종전의 교육과정과는 달리 교과 선택의 주체들이 다양화되어 있다. 특히 학생들에게 교과 선택의 실질적 권리를 부여하고 있어 그 명칭도 선택중심 교육과정으로 불리고 있다. 학생에 대한 교과 선택권부여는 교과담당 교사의 입장에서는 수업 결과에 대한 평가로 볼 수도 있다. 이 글을 통하여 고등학교 현장에서 윤리 교과가 경쟁 관계에 있는 다른 교과들과 동일한 조건에서 경쟁할 수 있는 조건을 갖추고 있는지를 확인해보고, 그렇지 못하다면 그 원인과 해결 방안을 모색하여 다양한 교과 선택의 주체로부터 올바른 평가를 받을 수 있는 조건을 갖추고자 한다. 이를 위해 교과내용의 선정과 구성, 평가 방법의 개선, 교과의 정체성 확립 등을 교과 내적으로 해결해야 할 과제로 제시하고 있다. 특히 심화선택과목인 ‘윤리와 사상’, ‘전통 윤리’의 단위 수 조정, 수학능력시험에서 윤리 교과 구성 등은 다른 교과와 공정한 경쟁을 하기 위해 반드시 우선적으로 시정되어야 할 구조적인 문제로 지적하고 있으며, 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 현실적으로 실현 가능한 대안을 제시하고 있다.
