This study has focused on the trend of the media studies as environment, namely ‘media-ecology’. On the assumption that media is the main cause of the social change, Media-ecology focuses to examine the impact of media on the society. Media-ecology concentrates on the invisible environment formed by the intrinsic character of media. The theoretical study of media-ecology is yet at the infancy status. However, media-ecology is recently drawing full attention because it provides the mete-theoretical and interdisciplinary point of view. The viewpoint of these sorts has obtained importance as self-reflective development in science is getting importance. In Korea, varied and fast development and diffusion of media is taking place. Korea is gathering attention as an international test-market of information and communication device. Therefore, It is a core theme of the study of communication of the impact of media shift on the human life and social change. It is now critical to study the media shift in the macro-viewpoint and its connection to the social change. Under this cognition, this study discussed the value of media-ecology as a framework of media environment by studying the theoretical development and estimation, trend of media-ecology.

본 연구는 환경으로서 미디어(media as environment)에 대한 연구, 즉 미디어생태학의 연구경향에 대한 것이다. 미디어생태학은 미디어를 사회변동의 핵심적 요인으로 상정하며,사회에 대한 미디어의 효과를 규명하는데 관심을 집중한다.미디어 자체의 본질적 특성에 의해 형성되는 보이지 않는 환경(invisible environment)에 주목하는 것이다. 미디어생태학은 그 이론적 발전에 있어서 아직은 유아기적인 상태에 머물러 있다. 그러나 최근 과학기술의 급속한 변화에 대한 성찰적 사유(thoughts of self-reflection)이 확산되면서 메타이론(mete-theory)적, 간학문적(interdisciplinary) 연구관점으로서 미디어생태학이 주목받고 있다. 한국의 경우 정보통신기기(Information and communication device)의 국제적인 테스트마켓(international test-market)으로서 주목받을 만큼 다양하고도 급속한 미디어의 발전과 확산이 이루어지고 있다. 때문에 미디어체계의 변동이 인간의 삶과 사회변동에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가의 문제는 커뮤니케이션 연구의 핵심논제가 된다. 거시적인 차원에서 미디어변화를 고찰하고, 사회변동과의 관련성을 규명하기 위한 연구가 필요한 시점이다. 이러한 인식하에 본 연구는 미디어생태학의 이론적 발전과 그 평가, 연구경향 등을 살펴봄으로써,최근의 미디어 현실을 이해할 수 있는 인식틀로서의 가능성을 논하였다.
