This study examined changes in children’s dual-factor mental health profiles across the elementary-to-middle school transition, associated school factors, and later depressive symptoms. Latent transition analysis of four waves of the Panel Study on Korean Children included 924 children and identified complete mental health, vulnerable, symptomatic-but-content, problem-dominant, and complex-vulnerability profiles. Among vulnerable fifth graders, 65.9% remained vulnerable in seventh grade and 20.6% transitioned to complete mental health. Peer relationships were positively, and academic stress negatively, associated with this transition; teacher relationships were nonsignificant. The vulnerable profile was associated with ninth-grade depressive symptoms beyond seventh-grade symptoms. Pathway differences were nonsignificant after seventh-grade symptoms were considered. Findings support repeated dual-factor screening and attention to peer relationships and academic burden before elementary school graduation.

본 연구는 초등학교에서 중학교로 진학하는 동안 아동의 정신건강 유형이 어떻게 유지⋅변화하는지 확인하고, 잠재취약형의 변화와 관련된 학교요인 및 중학교 후기 우울과의 관련성을 검증하였다. 한국아동패널 12⋅13⋅14⋅16차 자료를 연계하였으며, 잠재전이분석에는 초등학교 5학년과 중학교 1학년의 자아탄력성, 행복감, 삶의 만족도, 부모보고 내재화⋅외현화 문제에 모두 응답한 924명을 포함하였다. 분석 결과, 완전정신건강형, 잠재취약형, 증상⋅안녕 공존형, 문제우세형 및 복합취약형의 다섯 유형이 확인되었다. 초등학교 5학년 잠재취약형의 65.9%는 중학교 1학년에도 같은 유형에 머물렀고, 20.6%는 완전정신건강형으로 변화하였다. 초등학교 6학년의 또래관계가 좋을수록 완전정신건강형으로 변화할 가능성이 높았고, 학업스트레스가 높을수록 그 가능성은 낮았다. 교사관계는 유의한 관련을 보이지 않았다. 잠재취약형은 완전정신건강형보다 중학교 3학년 우울이 높았으며, 이 차이는 중학교 1학년 우울을 고려한 뒤에도 유지되었다. 변화경로별 후속 우울 차이는 중학교 1학년 우울을 고려하면 유의하지 않았다. 이 결과는 문제행동이 두드러지지 않더라도 긍정지표가 낮은 아동을 초등학교 단계부터 반복해 살피고, 졸업 전 또래관계와 학업부담을 함께 점검할 필요가 있음을 보여준다.
