The Significance of the Rock-Carved Seated Maitreya Buddha and the Bronze Face Buddha(銅面佛) at Dosolam Precipice, Seonunsa Temple
The rock-carved Maitreya Buddha at Dosolam precipice on Mount Seonunsan is the largest of its kind in the West Coast region. Historical records mentioning this rock-carved Maitreya Buddha date back to the mid-12th century. Given its massive scale, the creation of this Buddha image was likely supported by the state rather than being an undertaking by the temple itself. Although Kaesong(開 城:the capital of the Goryeo Dynast) was located far from Gochang, and there are no extant records detailing a relationship between the Goryeo regime and Seonunsa Temple, the historical context suggests a different origin. Until the mid-10th century, the area encompassing Mount Seonunsan and the Julpo Bay was controlled by the regime of Gyeon Hwon of Later Baekje(後百濟 甄萱), which established and operated a fortress known as Yeongjuseong(瀛州城) in Gobu. Furthermore, the compositional style of the rock-carved Maitreya Buddha at Dosolam precipice reflects a tradition of Maitreya worship that traces back to Mireuksa Temple in Iksan and Geumsansa Temple in Gimje. The stele inscription of National Preceptor Hyegeo (惠居國師) records that in 922, a pagoda was renovated at Mireuksa Temple in Iksan, and a seonbuljang(選 佛場) was established at Seonunsa Temple. The year 922 marked the zenith of the Later Baekje kingdom, a state founded upon the ideology of Maitreya. It is highly probable that the regime of Gyeon Hwon(甄萱), as part of a national revival initiative, carried out the renovation of the pagoda at Mireuksa(the cradle of Maitreya belief) while simultaneously establishing a seonbuljang at Seonunsa in Gochang and commissioning the rock-carved Maitreya Buddha at Dosoram precipice on Mount Seonunsan. Local gazetteers from the late Joseon Dynasty contain accounts noting that, in the 19th year of King Gongmin of Goryeo(1370), a cast-bronze face of the Maitreya Buddha was installed on the rock-carved figure at Dosoram, and that this bronze face subsequently fell to the ground in 1648(King Injo 20th). The rock-carved Maitreya Buddha at Dosolam precipice in Seonunsa Temple features clear evidence‐both in written records and in physical traces left on the rock face‐of a 銅面佛(Bronze-face Buddha). Therefore, it is appropriate to refer to this rock-carved Buddha, previously known as Dongbulam(東佛庵)by the name Dongbulam(銅佛庵:Bronze Buddha temple).
