Value Propositions of Digital Human-Based Fashion Services by Business Model Type - Industrial Contexts and Human-System Function Allocation -
The fashion industry is undergoing rapid digital transformation driven by advances in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and big data. Digital human technology has emerged as a key interface connecting brands, designers, and consumers. However, research has focused primarily on technological implementation, visual realism, and consumer acceptance, overlooking value creation through business model structures and human-system function allocation. This study classifies digital human-based fashion services by business model type and examines their value propositions through human-system interaction. A qualitative multiple-case study was conducted on 28 fashion service cases from the past five years incorporating at least one of the three core technologies: 3D modeling, human capture, and generative AI. Each case was analyzed by digital platform business model type and automation level based on human-system function allocation. Four business model types were identified: matching, spreading, innovating, and dominating. Matching and spreading were semi-automated, B2C-oriented models. Innovating primarily represented a semi-automated, B2B-oriented model providing infrastructure for digital human generation and operation. Dominating represented a hybrid B2B–B2C platform model integrating content generation and transaction functions, with automation ranging from semi-automated to fully automated. The findings reveal distinct value creation structures involving efficiency, complementarity, novelty, and lock-in, depending on industrial context and human-system function allocation. By repositioning digital human technology as a core value creation asset within business models, this study provides practical implications for fashion companies developing business model and automation strategies.
