This study aimed to develop womenswear designs by exploring the hybrid body imagery of the body artist Sainte-ORLAN and applying its expressive characteristics. As a research methodology, literature review and creative design practice were conducted concurrently. Through an examination of literature and prior studies on the French contemporary artist Sainte-ORLAN, the expressive characteristics of her hybrid body imagery were derived as fragmentation, fusion, expansion, and remodeling. Based on these characteristics, a studio practice was conducted, resulting in the production of four actual garments. The expressive characteristics of Sainte-ORLAN’s hybrid body imagery were translated into design elements and implemented throughout the garment development process. Specifically, the characteristic of fragmentation manifested in the division of distinct garment styles, color schemes, and anatomical details and structures. Fusion was applied to synthesize two or more disparate fashion items and historical costume features. Expansion was employed in the design process to maximize specific bodily features, while remodeling appeared in developing fashion items reconfigured through layering techniques. By applying fragmentation, fusion, expansion, and remodeling, a total of four physical outfits were created. Consequently, this study suggests that the expressive characteristics evident in the body art of ORLAN—a contemporary artist who continuously challenges conventional aesthetics and established norms to construct alternative bodily images—can be applied to the development and production of womenswear. This suggests the potential for expanding contemporary womenswear design and indicates that the expressive characteristics of contemporary art are not confined to conceptual design ideation, but may be translated across the entire execution process. Furthermore, this research holds significance in proposing new potentials for apparel development and creative expression through the integration of body art.
