The Effects of Humanoid Robot Presence in Fashion Retail on Brand Competence, Brand Dehumanization, and Brand Attitude
As humanoid robots become increasingly visible in consumer-facing environments, understanding how their presence shapes consumers’ perceptions of brands has become an important issue. Despite growing research on service robots, relatively little is known about the brand implications of humanoid robot presence in fashion retail environments, where aesthetics, creativity, and human-centered qualities are particularly salient. This study examines how the presence of a humanoid robot in a fashion retail store influences brand attitude through two brand-level perceptions: brand competence and brand dehumanization. A between-subjects online experiment was conducted with 345 U.S. consumers aged 20–39, who were randomly assigned to view a contemporary fashion store either with or without a humanoid robot. The robot was not assigned a specific service function, and two human employees remained present in both conditions, allowing the study to isolate the effect of the robot’s mere presence rather than employee replacement. Parallel mediation analysis revealed that humanoid robot presence significantly increased perceived brand dehumanization and decreased perceived brand competence. Brand dehumanization negatively influenced brand attitude, whereas brand competence positively influenced brand attitude. Both mechanisms produced significant negative indirect effects on brand attitude, while the direct effect became nonsignificant after accounting for the mediators. These findings demonstrate that the mere presence of a humanoid robot can shape brand-level perceptions even in the absence of direct consumer–robot interaction. The study extends service-robot research to fashion retail and shows that the visible presence of advanced robotic technology does not necessarily enhance perceptions of brand capability. The findings further suggest that fashion retailers should integrate humanoid robots in ways that communicate clear brand-relevant value while preserving the human-centered qualities associated with fashion brands.
