A Study on the Interfacial Bonding Strength and Practicality of Fabric-Inserted 3D Printing - A Case Study of Coprispalle Garment Production -
This study aims to optimize the fabric-inserted 3D printing process, which integrates flexible fabrics with 3D printed structures, and apply it to garment production to explore its practical and aesthetic potential. First, among four open-structure fabrics evaluated, yarn-dyed organza was selected as the optimal material for its excellent interfacial bonding strength with PLA filaments and resistance to thermal deformation. Second, resolution limit tests established minimum stable printing standards (line thickness 0.9 ㎜, point diameter 0.8 ㎜, English 14pt, Korean 18pt) for design planning. Third, peel strength evaluations revealed a tendency for higher bonding strength (p = 0.084) in the weft direction compared to the warp direction, highlighting the importance of fabric grain in pattern placement. Fourth, limit stacking tests determined a stable maximum build height of 40 ㎜ without structural warping. Fifth, washability tests using a Launder-O-meter verified practical durability, showing no structural loss. Based on these quantitative findings, a Coprispalle—an Italian bolero-style garment featuring a flat rectangular pattern (1,200 ㎜ × 800 ㎜) that forms a 3D silhouette upon interaction with the body—was produced. A single panel comprising 256 3D-printed units (5 ㎜ diameter, 20 ㎜ height) was printed 24 times on the yarn-dyed organza and connected. This created a stark textural contrast between the translucent fabric and 3D structures, successfully achieving flexible drapability and unique structural aesthetics. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that fabric-inserted 3D printing is an innovative surface decoration and 3D modeling technique fulfilling both aesthetics and practicality in modern fashion design.
