A Study on the Effects of UGC Characteristics in the Xiaohongshu Sportswear Category on Trust - Focused on Consumers in Shanghai -
In social commerce, consumers make purchase judgments by relying on user-generated content (UGC) produced by other users rather than on firm advertising, and this effect operates through trust in the content and in the platform. Prior research has often treated trust as a single construct or linked UGC directly to purchase intention, without distinguishing between individual content and the platform as separate trust targets. Drawing on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) framework, this study positions UGC characteristics as the stimulus (S) and content trust and platform trust as the organism (O), and examines how the effects differ by trust target. Using responses from Shanghai consumers with recent exposure to sportswear UGC on Xiaohongshu, we analyze how the informativeness, entertainment, authenticity, and interactivity of UGC affect content trust and platform trust. A model that separates content trust from platform trust fits the data better than a model that combines them, indicating that the two are distinct constructs; at the same time, the two forms of trust are substantially correlated, suggesting that they operate as empirically linked sub-dimensions of higher-order online trust. Entertainment, informativeness, and interactivity have positive effects on content trust, whereas authenticity does not, while all four characteristics positively affect platform trust. In particular, authenticity matters more for institution-level platform trust than for individual content judgments, indicating that the effects of trust cues are asymmetric across trust targets. By distinguishing between the two trust targets while recognizing their empirical overlap, this study clarifies the structural heterogeneity of UGC effects and offers target-specific guidance for creators, brands, and platform operators regarding the priority of information provision, entertaining expression, sponsorship transparency, and interaction strategies.
