Narrativizing the Human-Nonhuman Boundary through Fashion - Variations and Implications of Vampire Representations in Contemporary K-pop Idol Performance Costumes -
Concepts at the human–nonhuman boundary, including the vampire, recur in popular culture. Associated with aristocracy, immortality, and mystery, the vampire functions as a transnational visual code in global K-pop. This study views vampire representation in contemporary K-pop idol performance costumes not as decorative styling but as a visual text materializing a liminal being. It examines how costume and performance narrativize the human–nonhuman boundary and connect it to transmedia storyworlds. Hence, it analyzes 341 visual images drawn from official stills, music videos, music-show performances, and concept photos across 17 promotional cycles of seven Korean male idol groups between 2013 and 2026. An integrated framework combining human–nonhuman liminality, the semiotic function of performance costume, genre recontextualization, and transmedia narrative connectivity was applied to compare visual construction, boundary production, and cross-media function. Three types emerged: traditional representation, contemporary hybridity, and genre/storyworld expansion. Distinguished by the directness of traditional markers, the degree of dress-code recontextualization, and narrative dependence, they are neither sequential nor mutually exclusive and may overlap within a single cycle. Three implications follow. First, vampire costumes function as a transmedia narrative interface that visualizes the human–nonhuman boundary and shapes the visual identity of a group’s storyworld and its intellectual property (IP). Second, they operate as a fashion grammar of liminality that calibrates humanity and nonhumanity, allure and threat, while differentiating members into distinct storyworld characters through a mini-collection structure. Third, they enable glocal recontextualization by combining Western Gothic codes with K-pop youthfulness, synchronized choreography, and fashion aesthetics.
