Contemporary design seeks new formative languages through the convergence of art, science, and technology. In the field of textile design, there is an increasing demand for more experimental and expanded visual resources beyond conventional motifs derived from visible nature. Accordingly, this study proposes a methodology for extracting textile design motifs from the microscopic structures of optical microscope images through digital image processing and applying them to fashion design. A total of 39 specimens, including plants, animal hair, insects, and fish, were photographed, and seven representative specimens were selected through a two-stage screening process combining visual evaluation and quantitative information entropy analysis using ImageJ. The selected specimens were transformed into textile design motifs through digital image processing techniques, including noise reduction, contrast enhancement, edge detection, solarization, posterization, and color transformation. Textile patterns were then developed using square, diamond, and half-drop repeat structures and applied to fashion design through AI-based simulations. The results showed that microscope images possess distinctive formative characteristics, such as nonlinearity, asymmetry, and organic flow, which differentiate them from conventional geometry-based patterns. Cross-case analysis further identified three conceptual characteristics: the visualization of scientific aesthetics, the creation of irregular visual rhythms, and the provision of surreal visual experiences. These findings demonstrate the potential of microscopic images as a new visual resource for textile design and highlight their academic and formative value in expanding the convergence of science and art.
