Unsupervised Anomaly Detection in Powertrain ECU Time-Series Data Using Transformer-Based Autoencoder
This study presents a Transformer-based Autoencoder for unsupervised anomaly detection in powertrain Electronic Control Unit (ECU) sensor data, where real fault labels are scarce. To enable systematic evaluation, four domain-informed synthetic anomalies—Gaussian Noise, Point, Shapelet, and Trend—were injected into normal multivariate time-series signals from nine ECU sensors. The proposed encoder-only Transformer effectively captures long-range temporal dependencies and inter-sensor relationships, and anomalies are detected using a hybrid dynamic threshold based on reconstruction errors. Experimental results show that the Transformer Autoencoder outperforms RNN, LSTM, and GRU-based baselines, achieving an F1-Score of 0.6073 and Precision of 0.8469, with clearly separated error distributions. These findings demonstrate the practicality of Transformer-based unsupervised anomaly detection in ECU environments with limited labeled fault data.

Ever since next generation convergence technology became one of the most important industries in the nation, computing professionals have encountered a growing number of challenges. Along with scholars and colleagues in related fields, they have gathered in avariety of forums and meetings over the last few decades to share their knowledge, experiences and the outcome of their research. These exchanges have led to the founding of the International Next-generation Convergence technology (INCA) on December 1, 2015. INCA was registered as an incorporated association under the Ministry of Information and Communications. The main purpose of the organization is to improve our society by achieving the highest capability possible in next generation convergence technology.
