This paper attempts to analyze the hybrid monster in the film Monstrum mainly from an ideological perspective within a comparative cultural context. It is in the recent trend that the Joseon dynasty is represented from a negative perspective. The monster is similar to Minotaur and its variant Griever in that it grew devouring human flesh secretly in a maze. Its biological traits of have socio-political implications. Created by Yeonsangun's deviant experiments in Jojunbang beneath Gyeongbokgung, it reveals the abnormal desires of the ruler. It undermines monarchical divinity and raises a question to its legitimacy. The rebellious group seek to politically exploit the monster as a symptom of the king's crisis. Engulfed in the struggle between the rebellious forces and those defending the kingship, it destroys Geunjeongjeon. The destruction of the most authoritarian space symbolizes the refutation of the monarchical system, which reflects the subversiveness of the modern society. The monstrous grotesqueness trensgressing the natural boundary reflects the modern anxiety over the manipulation of body.

본 연구는 영화 <물괴>에 등장하는 혼종적인 괴물을 비교문화적인 맥락에서 이해하며, 이데올로기적인 관점에서 분석하는 것이다. 조선시대에 대한 부정적인 시각을 드러내는 최근 영상물의 트렌드를 따르고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 미로에서 비밀리에 성장한 미노타우로스 및 그 현대적 변종인 그리버와 유사한 물괴의 생물학적 특성은 사회정치적 의미를 내포하고 있다. 경복궁 지하의 조준방에서 연산군의 실험에 의해 탄생한 초롱이는 지배자의 비정상적인 욕망을 드러내어, 군주제의 신성을 훼손하고 정통성을 약화시킨다. 위기의 왕권의 징후로서 물괴를 정치적으로 이용하려는 반역파와 왕권 수호 세력간의 주도권 교전 중에 물괴는 근정전을 파괴하게 되는데, 이는 정통성의 부인을 상징하며 현대인의 전복성을 반영한다. 자연적인 경계를 넘어가는 물괴의 기형성에는 현대사회에서 신체의 조작을 통해 권력이 행사되는 것에 대한 불안과 우려가 투사되어있다.
