This study examines the college life experiences and educational needs of 40 international students enrolled in the College of Global Convergence at University A in Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. The participants consisted of students from Nepal, Kyrgyzstan, and Vietnam, and the data were collected through open-ended questionnaires and analyzed using content analysis. The findings revealed that the students entered the university primarily to improve their Korean language proficiency, gain international experience, and develop their future careers. During their college life, they positively perceived improvements in Korean language skills, diverse cultural experiences, and interactions with Korean students; however, they experienced difficulties in understanding major courses and completing academic assignments. The students identified career support, internship opportunities, scholarships, and enhanced Korean language education as their major educational needs, and many expressed a desire to work and remain in Korea after graduation. A notable finding was that while the students highly valued Korean language learning, they also requested English-based support for understanding major courses. This suggests that they viewed Korean as an essential competency for college adaptation, social relationship building, employment, and local settlement, while considering English an important medium for academic learning and disciplinary knowledge acquisition. These findings indicate the need for international student-focused colleges to establish a bilingual educational support system that integrates Korean language education with academic assistance. This study contributes to the literature by analyzing the actual college life experiences, educational needs, and perceptions of local settlement among students enrolled in an international student-focused college. Furthermore, it provides educational and policy implications for improving the operation of international student-focused colleges and fostering globally competent talents with local settlement potential.

본 연구는 충청남도 소재 A대학교 글로벌융합대학에 재학 중인 외국인 유학생 40명을 대상으로 대학생활 경험, 교육적 요구를 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 연구대상은 네팔, 키르기스스탄, 베트남 출신 학생으로 구성되었으며, 개방형 설문조사와 내용분석(content analysis)을 통해 자료를 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 학생들은 한국어 학습, 국제적 경험, 취업 및 진로 개발을 주요 동기로 대학에 진학한 것으로 나타났다. 대학생활 과정에서는 한국어 능력 향상, 다양한 문화 경험, 한국인 학생과의 교류를 긍정적으로 인식하고 있었으나, 전공수업 이해와 과제 수행 과정에서는 어려움을 경험하고 있었다. 특히 학생들은 취업 및 진로 지원, 인턴십 기회 확대, 장학금 지원, 한국어 교육 강화를 주요 교육적 요구로 제시하였으며, 상당수가 졸업 후 한국 취업과 한국 체류를 희망하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 외국인 전담학부 학생들은 한국어 능력 향상의 필요성을 높게 인식하면서도 전공수업 이해를 위해 영어 기반 지원을 요구하는 특징을 보였다. 이는 한국어를 대학생활 적응, 사회적 관계 형성, 취업 및 지역정주를 위한 핵심 역량으로 인식하는 동시에, 전공학습의 효율성을 위해 영어 설명과 번역 지원을 필요로 하고 있음을 보여준다. 이러한 결과는 외국인 전담학부가 한국어교육과 학업 지원을 통합적으로 제공하는 이중언어 기반 교육지원 체계를 구축할 필요가 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구는 외국인 전담학부 재학생의 실제 대학생활 경험과 교육적 요구, 지역정주 인식을 분석함으로써 외국인 전담학부의 운영 개선과 지역정주형 글로벌 인재 양성을 위한 교육적·정책적 기초자료를 제공하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
