Psychological Crisis in Middle-Aged Women: Roles of Work-Family Conflict, Event Impact, and Family Support
Purpose: This cross-sectional study compared the level of sense of crisis among middle-aged women and identified factors associated with it. Methods: Data were collected from 267 middle-aged women residing in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province using structured questionnaires measuring sense of crisis, coping skills, impact of events, and family support. Data were analyzed using the x2 test, independent t-test, and multiple logistic regression with bootstrap confidence intervals using SPSS/WIN 29.0. Results: Of the 267 participants, 192 (71.9%) were classified as experiencing a sense of crisis, whereas 75 (28.1%) were classified as not experiencing a sense of crisis. In the multivariate analysis, age, work-family conflict, marital status, presence of underlying diseases, anger, and impact of events were significantly associated with the likelihood of experiencing a sense of crisis. In particular, women with underlying diseases and higher anger levels had significantly higher odds of experiencing a sense of crisis.
Higher family support was associated with lower odds of experiencing a sense of crisis, whereas hobbies and coping skills were not statistically significant in the adjusted model. Conclusion: The findings suggest that sense of crisis among middle-aged women is associated with a combination of health status, emotional factors, and role-related stress. Integrated interventions addressing chronic disease management and emotional regulation may be needed to reduce the sense of crisis. In addition, workplace policies that support work-family balance, along with family- based counseling and community support programs, should be strengthened to promote psychological well-being and facilitate role adaptation among middle-aged women
