Peer Diffusion of Adolescent Gambling Behavior : The Role of Peer Gambling Exposure and Gambling Recommendation and Encouragement Behavior
This study aimed to examine the association between peer gambling exposure and lifetime gambling experience among adolescents and to investigate the associations of peer gambling exposure and gambling persistence during the past six months with gambling recommendation and encouragement behavior among adolescents with lifetime gambling experience. Data were drawn from the 2025 Survey on Youth Gambling, and the analyses included 13,481 adolescents, of whom 535 reported lifetime gambling experience. Frequency analysis, weighted chi-square tests, and weighted hierarchical binary logistic regression analyses were conducted. The main findings were as follows. First, peer gambling exposure was significantly and positively associated with lifetime gambling experience even after controlling for gender, school level, region, and average monthly allowance. Adolescents exposed to peer gambling had approximately 3.25 times higher odds of reporting lifetime gambling experience than those without such exposure. Second, among adolescents with lifetime gambling experience, those exposed to peer gambling had approximately 8.35 times higher odds of engaging in gambling recommendation and encouragement behavior than those without such exposure. Third, adolescents who had continued gambling during the past six months had approximately 3.92 times higher odds of engaging in gambling recommendation and encouragement behavior than those who had discontinued gambling. These findings suggest that adolescent gambling should be understood not only in terms of individual characteristics but also within the social context of contact with and exposure to peers’ gambling behavior. Extending previous research that has primarily focused on the relationship between peer environments and individual gambling experience, this study contributes to the literature by expanding the scope of analysis to include gambling recommendation and encouragement behavior toward others among adolescents with gambling experience. The findings further highlight the need for adolescent gambling prevention and intervention efforts to consider peer environments, gambling persistence, and gambling recommendation and encouragement behavior alongside individual-level factors.
