A Preliminary Empirical Study of the Cross-Sectional Relationships among the Components of the Gam-Su-Seong Human Rights Sensitivity Model - Evidence from Korean Correctional Officers -
This study preliminarily examined whether the cross-sectional relationships among emotional awareness (Gam), normative judgment (Su), and reflective adjustment (Seong) were consistent with the theoretical paths proposed by the Gam-Su-Seong Human Rights Sensitivity Model. The model conceptualizes human rights sensitivity as a process-oriented judgment competence involving these three interrelated components. Summed scores from 25 items—nine Gam, eight Su, and eight Seong items—were analyzed using cross-sectional self-report data from 125 Korean correctional officers. The same dataset had previously been used in a scale-development study. Descriptive statistics, correlations, simple and hierarchical regression analyses, and an observed-variable path analysis were conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics 27.0 and Mplus 8.1. Emotional awareness was positively associated with normative judgment (β=.443, p<.001) and reflective adjustment (β=.567, p<.001). After accounting for emotional awareness, normative judgment remained positively associated with reflective adjustment (β=.338, p<.001) and increased the explained variance by 9.2 percentage points (ΔR2=.092, p<.001). The STDYX-standardized indirect effect through normative judgment was significant (β=.150, SE=.048, p=.002, 95% bias-corrected bootstrap CI [.071, .264]), based on 5,000 bootstrap resamples. The direct effect also remained significant (β=.417, p<.001). The findings provide preliminary empirical evidence that the observed relationships among the three components are generally consistent with the model’s theoretical paths. However, they do not establish temporal or causal processes. The model may serve as a provisional framework for organizing the content and assessment domains of process-oriented human rights education. Further research using independent samples, longitudinal designs, and educational interventions is required.
