This study examines Yi Bingheogak’s (1759–1824) perceptions of women using the classification system presented in the Buyeolnyeorok, a section of the Gyuhap Chongseo. Previous studies primarily focused on the Gyuhap Chongseo as an encyclopedic work on women’s practical knowledge and domestic culture, or discussed the Buyeolnyeorok only in relation to women’s education and exemplary women. This study investigates how women were classified and positioned within the Buyeolnyeorok to clarify the evaluative framework through which Yi understood women’s roles and values. This study first analyzes the editorial purpose and textual position of the Buyeolnyeorok within the Gyuhap Chongseo, then examines the characteristics of its 23 categories of women. It further explores the placement of Joseon women within these categories, focusing on the meanings attached to classifications such as virtuous fidelity, loyalty and righteousness, literary accomplishments, artistic talent, and feminine dignity. The analysis demonstrates that Yi preserved conventional Confucian virtues such as filial piety, chastity, and domestic responsibility, while simultaneously recognizing a broader range of women’s qualities, including public commitment, intellectual ability, literary and artistic achievement, political judgment, and military capability. In particular, the distribution of Joseon women across multiple categories indicates that she did not reduce women to a single ideal centered on chastity but rather acknowledged them as historical subjects possessing diverse values, capacities, and forms of agency. Accordingly, the Buyeolnyeorok should be understood not as a rejection of Confucian gender ethics but as an attempt to broaden the criteria by which women were evaluated while remaining within the framework of the Confucian social order. The text thus provides important evidence of the changing perceptions of women in late Joseon society and reveals Yi’s scholarly consciousness as a female intellectual who sought to expand the historical recognition of women’s achievements.

본 논문은『규합총서』｢부열녀록｣의 여성 분류 체계를 중심으로 빙허각(李憑虛閣)의 여성 인식을 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 기존 연구는『규합총서』의 생활문화적 가치와 여성교육관에 주목하거나 ｢부열녀록｣을 여성사적 자료로 부분적으로 검토하는 데 머물렀다. 이에 본 연구는 ｢부열녀록｣에 나타난 여성 분류 체계와 조선 여성의 배치 양상을 분석함으로써, 빙허각이 여성을 어떠한 기준으로 이해하고 평가하였는지를 규명하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 먼저『규합총서』에서 ｢부열녀록｣이 차지하는 위치와 편찬 의도를 살펴보고, 이어 23개 여성 분류 항목의 특징과 의미를 분석하였다. 또한 ｢부열녀록｣에 수록된 조선 여성들의 배치 방식을 검토하여 열절·충의·문장·재예·여품 등 각 범주가 지닌 여성 가치의 의미를 고찰하였다. 분석 결과, 빙허각은 효녀·효부·열절 등 전통적인 유교적 여성 규범을 유지하면서도 충의·지식·문장·재예·검협·집정여자·여장군 등 다양한 범주를 함께 제시함으로써 여성의 공적 실천, 지적 능력, 예술적 성취, 정치적 판단과 같은 가치를 적극적으로 인정하였다. 특히 조선 여성들을 서로 다른 범주에 분산 배치한 방식은 여성을 정절 중심의 단일한 이상형으로 환원하지 않고 복수의 가치와 능력을 지닌 역사적 주체로 이해하였음을 보여준다. 결국 ｢부열녀록｣은 전통적 여성윤리를 부정한 텍스트라기보다 유교적 질서를 유지하면서도 여성을 평가하는 기준을 다원화하고 그 외연을 확장한 기록으로 이해할 수 있다. 이러한 점에서 ｢부열녀록｣은 조선 후기 여성 인식의 변화 가능성과 여성 지식인 빙허각의 학문적 자의식을 보여주는 중요한 자료로 평가할 수 있다.
