Comparative Study of the Cultural Archetypes Projected onto the Representations of Gangcheori and Jiaolong in Korea and China and Their Reproduction in Television Dramas
This study examines how the shared motif of the “unfinished dragon” has developed into distinct cultural representations in Korea and China and how the cultural archetypes associated with these figures are reproduced narratively in contemporary television dramas. To this end, the Korean Gangcheori, a variant of the Imugi that fails to ascend to heaven, and the Chinese Jiaolong, whose imagery most closely resembles that of Gangcheori, are examined comparatively. Drawing on Carl Jung’s theory of the “collective unconscious,” this study identifies and comparatively analyzes the psychological and cultural archetypes associated with these figures in the two countries. The findings show that Korean Gangcheori is represented as a disaster-inducing water deity characterized by a dual and composite nature, whereas Chinese Jiaolong is represented as a composite figure positioned between the Hui and the dragon. Moreover, the representation of Gangcheori embodies the archetypes of “compassion,” which emphasizes coexistence, and “overcoming,” which expresses hope In contrast, the representation of Jiaolong reflects an archetype that emphasizes hierarchy and order. These cultural archetypes have subsequently served as source material for contemporary television dramas, influencing the portrayal of these figures and related characters. In Chinese television dramas, Jiaolong primarily appears as a supporting character or villain, whereas the dragon, which occupies a higher position in the hierarchical order, is more often portrayed as a protagonist. This pattern can be understood as reflecting the aforementioned cultural archetypes. In contrast, Korean television dramas portray Gangcheori as a male protagonist. In particular, in the television drama Gwigung, Gangcheori endures hardship and is given a second opportunity to ascend to heaven, thereby reproducing the cultural archetypes of “overcoming” and “compassion.” The significance of this study lies not only in comparing the narratives associated with these characters but also in tracing the cultural archetypes crystallized through their representations in Korea and China. Furthermore, the study demonstrates the potential of folktale characters as source material for contemporary cultural content by examining how these figures can be adapted and reused in modern television dramas.
