This study examines how the biographical discourse on women—originating from Liu Xiang’s Lienü Zhuan (Biographies of Exemplary Women, 列女傳) in Han China—spread across East Asia and diverged into distinct conceptualizations of “exemplary women” (lienü, 列女) and “chaste/martyred women” (yŏllyŏ, 烈女) according to the socio-political conditions and ruling ideologies of Chosŏn Korea and Edo Japan. To trace this trajectory, the study adopts a comparative literature approach to analyze Liu Xiang’s Lienü Zhuan, Chosŏn’s state-compiled Samgang Haengsilto (Illustrated Conduct of the Three Fundamental Bonds) and 19th-century yŏhang (middle-layer literati) collections (Ihyang Gyŏnmunnok and Hŭijo Ilsa), and Kurosawa Hirotada’s privately compiled Zenzō Honchō Kokon Retsujo Den (Illustrated Biographies of Ancient and Modern Exemplary Women of Our Realm, hereafter Honchō Retsujo Den). The primary findings are as follows. First, while Chinese lienü narratives originated as political admonitions encompassing pluralistic female virtues (exemplary women), they gradually shifted following the institutionalization of Song Neo-Confucianism and Ming-Qing state-patronized chastity rewards, narrowing into an extreme cult of chastity and martyrdom (chaste/martyred women) that valorized bodily mutilation and suicide. Second, Chosŏn’s discourse revealed a profound narrative tension between the official canon and private biographical collections. The state-compiled Samgang Haengsilto institutionalized yŏllyŏ (烈女) strictly as chaste women who preserved marital fidelity through death or self- mutilation while enforcing severance from the natal family under the patrilineal doctrine of ch'ulga oein (marrying an outsider). In contrast, 19th-century yŏhang collections challenged this dogmatic ritualism by embracing kwŏndo (expedient flexibility), presenting a pragmatic morality that preserved both the wife and the husband while expanding the scope of ethical agency to include courtesans (kisaeng) and bondservants. Third, Kurosawa Hirotada’s Honchō Retsujo Den operated as an independent intellectual project under the Tokugawa shogunate. While utilizing the formal genre conventions of lienü, it constructed a hybrid discourse by re-packaging pre-existing medieval narratives. It accommodated Buddhist compassion practices—such as Empress Kōmyō’s miraculous healing—and incorporated martial exploits of warrior heroines (nyōkyō), such as Tomoe and Hangaku, while legitimizing filial devotion to natal parents as supreme virtue (chihyo). This study demonstrates that East Asian female biographical traditions were not a uniform transplantation of Confucian dogma, but dynamic fields of discourse marked by the conceptual divergence between pluralistic “exemplary women” (lienü) and restrictive “chaste women” (yŏllyŏ), shaped through local negotiations with power structures, literary traditions, and gender norms.
